  • Report deviations from documented procedures to the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Ensure proper functioning of laboratory operations.
  • Communicate laboratory issues to the Laboratory Supervisor.

Please note this position is seasonal / contract, working some weekend and evening shifts with an end-date of November 30, 2025.

Summary

We are currently hiring for a Laboratory Technician, to join our Trace Organics / Environmental lab out of our Edmonton, Alberta facility. This position is an entry-level role where one can gain career experience in a laboratory with direction from the Laboratory Supervisor and other Laboratory team members. The successful candidate will assist with administrative and basic laboratory activities.

What you will be doing
  • Carry out laboratory analytical testing in accordance with documented SOPs or recognized standard reference methods. Testing includes extraction of all water and soil samples for a variety of Trace Organic tests such as BTEX / F1, F2-4, T.E.H, Sask HC, BTEX Leachate and PAH analysis.
  • Adhere to all quality, safety, environmental, corporate and human resources policies and procedures as outlined in AGAT Laboratories’ Policies and Procedures Manual, Safety Manual, Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and Quality Control Procedures Manual (QCPM), including laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Provides general lab support including washing of glassware and cleaning work stations
  • Report any deviation from documented procedures to the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager and that approval is obtained prior to reporting any analytical result. Approval must be documented by use of the “Variation Request and Approval Form” that is available on the Intranet.
  • Inform the Laboratory Supervisor and / or Manager of any nonconforming event related to client samples, analytical testing or other laboratory operations.
  • Inform the Laboratory Supervisor and / or Manager of any unsafe conditions in the laboratory.
  • Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure proper functioning of laboratory operations by : a) monitoring the performance of the instruments, b) ensuring adequate inventory of laboratory consumable supplies and chemicals, and c) practicing good housekeeping.
  • Communicate general laboratory issues to the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager through weekly / monthly laboratory meetings and as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties, as required by management.
What you bring to the table
  • Post-secondary education with a Technical Diploma or Science Degree would be an asset.
  • Previous laboratory work experience.Experience with GC-FID and MSD an asset.
  • Basic computer skills with experience with MS office and LIMS.
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Hand‑Eye coordination and attention to detail.
  • Mature work ethic, with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift 25+ pounds from time to time.
