Job summary

Matakana Scaffolding in Burnaby, BC, is seeking an Engineers‑in‑Training (EIT) to design temporary works and scaffolding systems under the supervision of Professional Engineers.

You’ll prepare structural calculations and reports, develop AutoCAD drawings, review existing scaffolding for safety, and collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project teams.

This role offers mentorship toward a P.Eng. designation and a salary of CA$60,000–$80,000 per year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering required.
  • EIT status with EGBC or eligibility to register.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering fundamentals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing scaffolding systems and temporary structures.
  • Prepare structural calculations, reports, and design details under supervision.
  • Develop AutoCAD drawings and design packages.
  • Review scaffolding designs for safety and compliance.

As an EIT, you’ll work alongside experienced Professional Engineers, gaining hands‑on experience designing temporary works and scaffolding systems for a wide variety of commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects across British Columbia. This role offers an excellent opportunity to build technical expertise, develop practical engineering skills, and work toward your P.Eng. designation under professional mentorship. Engineers‑in‑Training typically perform engineering work under the supervision of a Professional Engineer while gaining the experience required for professional registration.

Compensation

  • $60,000 to 80,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the design and analysis of scaffolding systems and temporary structures for construction projects.
  • Prepare structural calculations, engineering reports, design details, and technical documentation under the guidance of Professional Engineers.
  • Develop and revise AutoCAD drawings and design packages.
  • Review existing scaffolding and temporary works to evaluate structural adequacy and loading conditions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, fabricators, and project teams to develop safe, practical, and efficient engineering solutions.
  • Respond to technical inquiries and support project coordination throughout design and construction.
  • Participate in site visits to observe construction activities, gather field information, and support engineering assessments.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable CSA standards, the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), WorkSafeBC requirements, and industry best practices. WorkSafeBC requires engineered scaffold designs in certain circumstances beyond prescriptive requirements.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering fundamentals, load paths, and construction principles.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with structural analysis software is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Previous co‑op, internship, or construction experience is considered an asset.
