Job summary

Ontario Public Service in Sudbury is seeking a Technologist 2, Chemical Lab to provide analytical and physical laboratory support for geoscience projects. You will perform sample preparation, geostandard preparation, operate lab equipment and conduct various tests in a dynamic mineral analysis setting.

The role involves jaw crushing, pulverizing rocks, mineral separation, and preparing materials for analysis, with opportunities to create geostandards and support multiple geoscience projects

Qualifications

• Knowledge of laboratory procedures, standards and QC.
• Good understanding of health and safety practices including WHMIS.
• Experience with sample preparation and mineral separation in geological lab.
• Knowledge of elementary mineralogy, petrography and rock/soil properties.
• Ability to operate crushers, grinders, assay furnaces, balances and mineral separators.

Responsibilities

• Process rock, mineral, ore, tills and soils for analysis.
• Concentrate and separate minerals and rock fragments.
• Create geostandard reference materials.
• Prepare materials for elemental and mineral analyses (soils and responsable deposits).
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

About the job

• process including jaw crushing and pulverizing rocks, minerals, ores, tills and soils for elemental and mineralogical analysis
• concentrate and separates minerals, and rock fragments

• prepare for elemental and mineral analysis unconsolidated, loose, heterogeneous superficial deposits materials (soil, glacial drift, alluvium)
• perform other duties as assigned

What you bring to the team

Technical knowledge and experience:

• You have knowledge of laboratory standard operating procedures, standards and techniques including quality control
• You have a good understanding of laboratory health and safety practices and procedures including WHMIS and designated substances
• You have experience with sample preparation and mineral separation as might be obtained in a geological laboratory
• You have knowledge of elementary mineralogy, petrography, and rock, mineral and soil properties
• You have the ability to work with specialized and automated equipment such as crushers, grinders, assay furnaces, automated balances, mineral separators and do regular maintenance and upkeep

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You can work in a team, in environments that may be dangerous to health and safety using such equipment as respirators, eye and ear protectors, protective gloves, and aprons
• You have proven verbal and written communication skills to communicate with team members, to prepare materials for the Division's seminars exhibiting the laboratory's achievements

Analytical skills:

• You possess sound judgement and analytical skills, accuracy to carry out sample preparation, and prepare geostandards and other tests
• You have time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines, and ability to keep detailed records on work done at the end of each day

Computer knowledge:

• You have the ability to work with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• You have knowledge of computers to keep accurate records of results and observations
