Qualifications

  • Experience with Canadian Aviation Regulation (CAR) 573, 561, 521 and 604 as it relates to SMS.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in aerospace engineering or maintenance.
  • 2+ years of SMS-related experience with pertinent regulations and international standards.
  • 2 years working in an SMS team as an investigator, auditor or related role in maintenance/engineering.
  • 2+ years experience applying risk management principles and tools.
  • 2+ years experience leading a team including performance management and succession planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management within the SMS department and establish an accountable SMS organization across certificates.
  • Plan, manage and maintain the SMS per CAR requirements and develop a strategic maturity roadmap.
  • Direct safety assurance, product safety enhancements and safety training.
  • Monitor safety performance and customer voice metrics to drive improvements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance aeronautical product safety.
  • Oversee document control for SMS policies and records; coordinate internal audits with QA.
  • Prepare annual SMS budget and track safety metrics improvements.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Safety Management System (SMS) Manager to join our team in a permanent position covering a vacancy. This is an on-site role located in Calgary, Alberta.

Direct Accountabilities. The SMS Manager is accountable to:
  • Organization and Leadership: Provide leadership and management within the department through a structural process of objective setting, performance appraisals and individual development plans as appropriate. Establish an accountable SMS organization across all our Transport Canada issued Certificates through embracing and demonstrating accountable leadership principles. Instill a culture of daily, weekly and monthly review of performance
  • SMS: Plan, manage and maintain the SMS across all our Transport Canada issued Certificates. Ensure our processes comply with Canadian Aviation Regulation (CAR) 107. Develop a strategic roadmap for increasing maturity of SMS that includes development of Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance and Safety Promotion activities. Ensure appropriate SMS training roll out and effective communication on safety-related topics, including the development of related training and communication.
  • Product Safety: Provide direction regarding safety assurance and process improvement activities related to product safety. Address identified safety hazards through liaison across different departments as required.
  • Customer Experience: Monitor and measure the organization’s safety performance with special attention given to voice-of-the-customer related metrics. The safety of products delivered to internal and external customers are paramount to the SMS Manager, who advocates for exceptional product safety.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support improvement initiatives to make aeronautical products safer. Develop and execute strategies to improve the safety of products delivered to the customer by translating opportunities into proactive actions.
  • Document Control: Manage the control of SMS documents and records. Oversee the administration of Document Control functions including maintaining document control policies and procedures as related to safety.
  • Internal Audits: Collaborate with Quality Assurance in relation to the internal audit program and address in timely manner any preventative and corrective action assigned.
  • Financial: Prepare annual budget for SMS activities, and manage the system for measuring Product Safety metrics, including leading initiatives for improvements.
Experience required:
  • Experience and understanding of the Canadian Aviation Regulation 573, 561, 521 and 604 as it relates to SMS. Equivalency will be granted for individuals who have experience and understanding of European, American or Military regulation related to Safety Management
  • Experience in monitoring Safety Performance through the use of metrics and performing Safety Assessments
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience in aerospace engineering or maintenance
  • 2 or more years of SMS related experience with pertinent regulations and international standards.
  • 2 years’ working in an SMS Team as an investigator, auditor or other direct experience in the application of an SMS in a maintenance or engineering environment.
  • 2 or more years of experience applying risk management principles and tools
  • 2 or more years experience leading a team; including managing performance, succession planning and team building

Note - For candidates from the Royal Canadian Air Force, experience with the RCAF Flight Safety Program will be considered as equivalent.

  • CRSP or RCAF qualification as a Flight Safety Officer will be considered an asset
  • Valid AME Licence or Bachelor’s degree in engineering or an aerospace related program, is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Enterprise or Material Resource Planning software (i.e., Visual Manufacturing, IFS, DRIMS, ADAM) is an asset
Competencies
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Previous experience with SharePoint is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand technical drawings
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage conflicts
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimum supervision and direction
