A local school district in Courtenay is seeking a part-time Education Assistant to support K-12 students with diverse abilities. The role involves assisting in classrooms, personal care activities, and following individualized education plans. Applicants are required to have Grade 12 education, relevant certifications, and experience in a structured environment. Elementary and Secondary Education Assistants (EAs) support individual students or groups of students in grades K-12. EAs support students and assist behaviour resource, learning support and classroom teachers with instructional and non-instructional tasks. They assist in areas of personal care, teaching and behaviour management. EAs may be assigned by their supervisor to work in a variety of classrooms and/or school programs such as LifeSkills, Prep Program, ENTER, swim programs, field trips, etc.
Grade 12 education supplemented by Human Services Worker Program certificate and coursework in:
Two years recent experience supporting students with diverse abilities in a structured environment and a variety of complex learning, behavioural and intellectual needs; commitment to continual learning and recertification as required; French language proficiency if assigned to a French Immersion classroom; ability to model language on communication systems at a child’s level; valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license and license appropriate to the type of equipment/vehicle being operated; personal vehicle available for use on the job is preferred; ability to work effectively with staff and students; willingness to provide curriculum support to students in academic and elective classes such as shop, cooking, physical education if assigned by the supervisor; willingness to work in an inclusionary setting supporting differentiated instruction with adapted and modified curriculum; meets the physical requirements of the position including lifting, bending, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds if assigned to a physically-dependent student; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Under the supervision of the school Principal, Vice Principal and the Principal of Inclusive Education or designate, and following the guidance of applicable teachers, the EA provides support to individual or small groups of students in multiple settings including classroom instruction, activities of daily living and behaviour support for students in accordance with the individual education plan. Duties may include carrying out personal and health care routines, supporting off-site program activities and work experiences, and assisting with transportation or supervision as required. The EA participates in student observation, data collection and implementation of Individual and Behaviour Support Plans, follows Student Learning Plans and Student Safety Plans, and supports inclusion of students with diverse learning needs. The EA builds positive relationships with students, follows work procedures and safety regulations, and may perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor. Student supervision may be required as needed.
Education Assistants work in various school and community settings, supporting students with physical or intellectual disabilities. Responsibilities may include implementing personal care plans, assisting with toileting and/or catheterization, mobility training, lifting, seizure management, feeding, personal hygiene, colostomy care, and supervising medication.
