EAM performs all aspects of highway and bridge maintenance including, but not limited to, vegetation control, drainage, sign repairs, pavement repairs, concrete and wood bridge repair, gravel surface grading, anti-icing, snow plowing, and incident and emergency response.

Position Summary:

The Road Superintendent plans, schedules and supervises Highway Maintenance activities on Service Area Highways and Roads ensuring compliance with the Highway Maintenance Agreement between EAM and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) and the EAM Quality Management System.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules and supervises Highway Maintenance activities utilizing available equipment and human resources in the most efficient manner.
  • Plans, estimates, schedules and supervises extra work projects awarded by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.
  • Coordinates complex work assignments, annual work schedules, applicable EAM training programs and road inspections.
  • Supervises unionized work crews and manages individual performance.
  • Ensures compliance with MoTT standards, the QMS and all safety regulations.
  • Ensures accuracy of work reporting including accomplishment, manpower, equipment and material usage.
  • Customer focused communication with the MoTT, the general public and stakeholders; takes corrective action whenever necessary.
  • Responds to emergencies involving traffic and road closures when required.
  • Ensure processes are consistent with quality objectives and support and suggest continual improvement.
  • Reports to the Operations Manager and assists the Quality Manager in performing annual road and infrastructure inspections.
  • Ensures proper maintenance and servicing of equipment to increase life of equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Set the example by actively contributing to department and company goals.
  • Clarify expectations and entertain good communication to inferior supervisors and crews
  • Seek additional training as needed.
  • Develop and achieve departmental/company goals and controls.
  • To join the Operations Management Team for support and assistance in any case of emergency or special requirement.

Qualifications:

  • 5+years of experience working in the construction industry
  • 3 years of experience in a management position
  • 2 years of experience managing in a unionized environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and a good sense of humor
  • Degree in Engineering is considered an asset
  • Experience in highway maintenance or civil construction is considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Willing to relocate to Hope or Chilliwack
  • Experience working with MoTT Hwy Maintenance is considered an asset
  • Engineering or Management degree is considered an asset

The salary range for this position will be discussed during the interview stage, taking into consideration candidate qualifications and experience.
