Job description

Research Scientist / Senior Scientist, Quantum Devices

Would you like to develop innovative technology with superb colleagues who are top experts in their field? Are you enthusiastic about working with fascinating projects in state-of-the-art research facilities? VTT might be just the place for you.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning, and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds from 55+ different nationalities focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT's tech & infra .

We are seeking several Research Scientists and Senior Scientists to join our growing quantum device team.

The positions support ambitious research programmes on semiconductor spin qubits, cryogenic electronics, graphene Josephson field-effect transistors (JoFETs), and future quantum computing hardware platforms.

As a member of our multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the development of next-generation quantum technologies from fundamental device concepts to scalable hardware solutions. Depending on your expertise and interests, your work may span device design, modelling, nanofabrication, characterisation, cryogenic measurements, and system-level technology development.

Here’s some examples of our team’s work:

Conduct research on semiconductor spin qubits, cryogenic electronics, graphene JoFETs, or related quantum devices.

Participate in device design, fabrication, characterisation, and data analysis and modelling according to your expertise.

Contribute to the development of emerging quantum computing and sensing technologies within European and national research initiatives.

Publish scientific results in leading journals and present your work at international conferences.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and industrial partners to translate research results into future technologies.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

A PhD or equivalent experience in physics, electrical engineering, materials physics, or a related field.

Experience in one or more of the following areas: superconducting and/or semiconductor devices, low-temperature physics, microelectronics, nanoelectronics or quantum technologies.

Interest in experimental research, such as nanofabrication and related device design, device characterisation, cryogenic measurements, and technology development.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to work effectively in international research environments.

The positions offer a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of European quantum technology development, from fundamental device physics to scalable quantum hardware platforms. Researchers will have access to the state-of-the‑art Micronova nanofabrication facilities and advanced cryogenic measurement infrastructure and will collaborate closely with leading European research organisations and industrial partners.

At VTT, you will be part of a world‑class research environment where scientific excellence, technological impact, and close collaboration with industry come together to create the future of quantum technologies. We value diversity and know that different perspectives strengthen research and innovation.
