Job summary

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre in Ontario seeks a Research Scientist (Applied Data Science) to lead data-driven research, develop scalable software tools, and deliver AI-ready analytics for approved R&D priorities.

You will build reusable data workflows, apply machine learning and computer vision methods, and translate client needs into technical plans and dashboards, ensuring auditability and reproducibility.

Qualifications

• BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng, or equivalent in applied data science or related field.
• 3–5 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, applied data science, ML/AI implementation, research software development, or related fields.
• PhD considered an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design, development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of scoped software tools, data workflows, dashboards, automation tools, AI-enabled applications, and digital horticulture components within approved R&D projects and client-facing work.
• Develop documented, reusable, auditable data structures, metadata practices, lifecycle controls, versioning, and responsible data-use methods.
• Apply data science, ML/AI, computer vision, statistical modelling and advanced analytics to produce scientifically valid outputs for approved research and service purposes.
• Translate research, business, client, and partner needs into technical requirements, implementation plans, resource estimates, acceptance criteria, and delivery plans for review and approval.

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) can help you grow your career because we are looking for a Research Scientist (Applied Data Science), to join our amazing team.

Reporting to the Director of Consumer, Sensory and Market Insights or delegate, the Research Scientist provides applied research, data science, software, analytics, AI-readiness, and digital horticulture leadership within approved R&D priorities, projects, services, and workplans.

The role leads scoped technical implementation, develops reusable and auditable research data workflows and analytical tools, supports proof-of-value projects, contributes to client and partner opportunities, and provides technical recommendations that support applied research delivery.

Content Columns

• Lead the technical design, development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of scoped software tools, research data workflows, dashboards, automation tools, AI-enabled applications, and digital horticulture components within approved R&D projects, service, and client-facing work.
• Develop documented, reusable, auditable, and quality-controlled data structures, metadata practices, lifecycle controls, version control approaches, code-integrity practices, and responsible data-use methods.
• Apply data science, machine learning, computer vision, statistical modelling, decision-support, reporting, and advanced analytics methods to produce scientifically valid, reproducible, interpretable outputs for approved research and service purposes.
• Translate research, business, client, and partner needs into technical requirements, implementation plans, resource estimates, acceptance criteria, service concepts, and delivery plans for review and approval.

What we need from you…

• BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng, or equivalent with experience in applied data science including computer science, software engineering, data science, bioinformatics, computational biology, information systems, artificial intelligence, or machine learning, or a closely related field.
• Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience in software engineering, data engineering, applied data science, ML/AI implementation, research software development, scientific computing, digital systems, or applied research technology delivery.
• PhD considered an asset.
