Job summary

University of Alberta is seeking a Manager, Research Finance to lead the Research Administrative Services (RAS) Finance Team and ensure the financial administration of a large portfolio of externally funded research.

The role reports to the Director, RAS and drives internal controls, financial reporting and sponsor compliance across research funds, contracts and revenue streams. It requires strong leadership and collaboration across campus.

Qualifications

• University degree required and a professional accounting designation.
• 5+ years of progressively responsible experience with large, complex admin and financial systems, preferably in research administration.
• Proven experience leading, supervising and developing staff.
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial management practices and internal controls.
• Knowledge of the research funding environment and sponsor requirements.
• Experience improving financial processes, procedures and controls.
• Experience with financial reporting, audits and policy interpretation.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across organizational units.
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with organizational change and system implementations.

Responsibilities

• Leads the RAS Finance Team and manages staff performance.
• Develops work plans and service standards for RAS and the Office of the Vice-President (Research).
• Manages day-to-day workflows and resources to meet deadlines.
• Oversees financial reporting and invoicing for grants and contracts.
• Develops financial processes, controls and staff training.
• Coordinates internal and external audits of research funds.
• Provides financial guidance on policies and standards to researchers and staff.
• Delivers institutional reporting on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
