Overview
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, is seeking an experienced electrical engineer in the area of electric power systems and distributed energy resources to help design and utilize the Grid Modernization Centre (GMC). The candidate will fulfill the research goals of the principal investigator (PI) and report to the PI.
Duties
- Power system modeling and analysis using dynamic and electromagnetic transient simulation tools
- Real-time simulation of power systems
- Design and utilization of hardware-in-the-loop and power-hardware-in-the-loop test setups
- Failure and contingency analysis of electric power systems
- Testing and analysis of inverter-based resources and electric vehicle charging infrastructure
- Testing, analysis, and design of protection, control, and automation schemes for power systems
- Grid impact analysis of electric vehicles
- Testing and modeling of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles
- Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals
Qualifications
- A PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on power systems
- A minimum of 5 years of working experience in the utility sector
- Strong publication record in IEEE journals in the area of electric power systems
- Strong experience with electromechanical dynamics simulation tools (preferably PSS/E and PSLF). This experience should be reflected in the candidate’s journal publication record
- Strong experience with real-time digital simulators (RTDS, Typhoon, and OpalRT)
- Experience with electromagnetic transient simulation programs (preferably PSCAD and EMTP-RV)
- Strong programming skills (preferably for Python and Matlab)
- Strong experience of design and utilization of power HIL setups
- Extensive experience of root cause failure analysis for electric power systems
- Experience with wind/solar inverter modeling using EMT simulation tools will be considered a plus
- Experience of post-doctoral studies is an asset
