Applied Research at NAIT supports industries and communities with a focus in circular economy, cleaner energy, digital and virtual environments, food product development, industrial process automation, land management and restoration. Our applied research model is rooted in strong industry partnerships and solving real-world challenges through analytical testing, technology development, prototyping, pilot studies and knowledge transfer.

At the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES), we have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate – Geoscience to support applied research projects in mineral resource development, mining and hydrocarbon recovery. CEES is home to an innovative team of scientists, engineers and technologists specializing in sustainable energy and mining, water management and tailings management. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead industry-funded applied research projects, with a mineralogical and geochemical focus, with support from the Research Chair. This position offers a hands-on, high-impact role in designing and executing R&D initiatives that deliver practical outcomes for Alberta and beyond.

This position is ideal for a geologist or geoscientist with strong technical skills in mineralogy and geochemistry, as well as a passion for applied research. You will work closely with internal teams, industry partners, and collaborators to ensure project outcomes create impact for industries and communities alike.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Lead applied research projects related to mineral resource development, mining and hydrocarbon recovery
  • Steward project budgets, timelines, and resource allocations
  • Plan and execute mineralogical and geochemical laboratory work using techniques such as XRD, XRF, SEM, ICP-MS / OES
  • Analyze and interpret data to answer defined research questions and support partner decision-making
  • Communicate research findings with internal and external stakeholders through presentations, technical reports and publications
  • Develop new project scopes and budgets in collaboration with Business Development team and Research Chair

Skills & Abilities :

  • Strong technical background in mineralogy and geochemistry
  • Must be experienced in Rietveld analysis using JADE for mineral quantification from powder x-ray diffraction patterns.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation such as XRF, SEM or ICP-MS / OES is highly desirable.
  • Experience leading research or technical projects, with demonstrated skills in project management and client engagement considered an asset.
  • Skilled in data analysis, interpretation, and technical writing
  • Strong communication, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex findings to diverse audiences
  • Qualifications :

  • Graduate degree (PhD, Master’s, or Bachelor’s with relevant experience) in geology, geosciences, environmental sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience.
  • Expertise in X-ray diffraction of complex mineral assemblies.
  • Experience in mining, energy, or environmental sectors is considered an asset.
  • Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

    Remuneration : $ 71,098.04 - $ 95,372.94 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Associate I).

    This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
