Overview

Please note this role will work onsite at the University of British Columbia. Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Research Associate to engage in basic and translational research in the lab of Dr. James C. Zimring. This role involves collaboration with the University of British Columbia and the Innovation division of Canadian Blood Services, with opportunities for translation of research into operations and mission.

Responsibilities
  • In the lab with minimal supervision, design and conduct experiments, process and interpret data, troubleshoot technical tasks, and contribute to various Research and Development projects.
  • Design experiments, read pertinent literature, and help identify research objectives, strategies, and methods.
  • Keep detailed records of experimental conditions, procedures, and results.
  • Oversee organization and maintenance of key laboratory resources (e.g., cryopreserved cells, mouse strains, vivarium management).
  • Follow professional ethics regarding data collection, integrity, privacy, reporting, and ethics protocol for human and animal work.
  • Contribute to grant and manuscript writing and assist in staff or student supervision.
  • Opportunity for formal teaching affiliation with the local university if desired; laboratory work remains priority.
Formula for success
  • Design and conduct experiments, collect, interpret, analyze, organize, store, and present data in compliance with all regulations.
  • Utilize laboratory equipment and procedures; participate in development/validation of new or existing laboratory technologies.
  • Read literature to identify research objectives and methods.
  • Maintain detailed records of conditions, procedures, and results.
  • Oversee resources management (e.g., cryopreserved cells, mouse strains, vivarium).
  • Adhere to ethics of data collection, privacy, interpretation, and consent related to human samples and animal work.
  • Possibility to submit abstracts to academic meetings and present posters or talks.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings and departmental seminars or journal clubs as appropriate and manageable with experiments.
  • Assist the laboratory director with manuscript preparation and grant applications; assist in staff supervision and performance reviews.
Desired education and skills
  • Doctoral degree with specialization in an appropriate area from a recognized academic institution required.
  • At least 2 years of postdoctoral training or 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Background in immunology, red cell biology, and/or redox biology is an asset.
  • Ability to learn new systems and scientific paradigms.
  • Strong background and proficiency in flow cytometry is an asset.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Functional understanding of statistics as applied to small biological experiments.
