Job summary

The Sunnybrook Research Institute, Department of Psychiatry, affiliated with the University of Toronto, seeks a Research Assistant for the Suicide Prevention Research Collaborative (SPRC) lab. The role focuses on suicide prevention, mood disorders and quality improvement, including data extraction from coronial charts and collaboration with the PI and lab team.

On-site, regular part-time position requiring at least two years of progress toward an Honours degree in psychology or health sciences.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled university/college student who has completed at least 2 years of post-secondary education in an Honours bachelor’s degree in psychology/public health/epidemiology/health sciences.
  • Experience extracting data from medical charts or other chart reviews is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Data Entry: Coding and extracting data from a substantial volume of case files and reports.
  • Coding verification: Revision of previous database coding with QA following internal dictionary.
  • Data transferring: Moving data from various databases into a centralized digital database.
  • Data merging: Ensure data merging follows updated coding dictionary for migration to centralized database.
  • Ethical Compliance: Ensure all research activities comply with institutional guidelines and ethics board approvals.
  • Reporting: Provide feedback on data migration, QA, and transfers between platforms.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Liaise between PI, lab manager, and research coordinator for project management.

Research Assistant, Department of Psychiatry, Sunnybrook Research Institute

Status: Regular Part-Time

Hours: 15 - 22.5 hours per week; 2 - 3 days per week, from 9 am to 5 pm, some flexibility required.

Location: On-site at either at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Bayview Campus or the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario (25 Morton Shulman Ave, Toronto, ON M3M 0B1)

Job Overview

The Sunnybrook Research Institute, Department of Psychiatry, affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking an energetic and efficient Research Assistant in the Suicide Prevention Research Collaborative (SPRC) lab to work in the areas of suicide prevention, mood disorders and quality improvement. Our lab is involved in one of the largest coroner data collection projects worldwide and this individual will assist in expanding this growing database. They will be responsible for conducting data extraction from coronial medical charts. This role also involves working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), lab manager, and research assistants.

Required
  • Currently enrolled university/college student who has completed at least 2 years of post-secondary education in an Honours bachelor’s degree in psychology/public health/epidemiology/health sciences.
  • Experience extracting data from medical charts or other chart reviews strongly preferred.
  • Expert proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Beginning to intermediate knowledge of REDCap.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with handling multiple research tasks within the project, such as maintaining research integrity, ethics management, and data entry.
Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work on a number of projects led by Dr. Mark Sinyor, the details of the job responsibilities will be based on the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the projects. Some of the responsibilities may include:

  • Data Entry: Coding and extracting data from a substantial volume of case files and reports
  • Coding verification: Revision of previous database coding, including coding quality assurance following internal coding dictionary.
  • Data transferring: Transferring existing data collected in different databases into a centralized digital database.
  • Data merging: Ensure that data merging follows the updated internal coding dictionary, facilitating data migration to a centralized database.
  • Ethical Compliance: Ensure all research activities comply with institutional guidelines and ethics board approvals.
  • Reporting: Provides feedback regarding the process of data migration, quality assurance, and data transferring between digital platforms.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Liaise between the PI, lab manager, and research coordinator to facilitate smooth project management.
