Job description

Description

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

This position is integral in advancing research on antimicrobial resistance, and supporting other projects in the Bacteriology Lab. This position will work with other lab staff (e.g., postdocs and research assistants) and also support the training of students in the laboratory.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support laboratory research by assisting in the isolation and characterization of bacteria from animal and human samples
  • Assist with antimicrobial susceptibility testing and resistance profiling under the guidance of the research team
  • Help execute experiments related to antimicrobial resistance in animal-derived bacteria, following established protocols
  • Contribute to data analysis and interpretation, supporting the preparation of research findings for publication
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, providing technical support to integrate findings into broader research initiatives
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of experiments, protocols, and results to ensure data integrity
  • Support lab operations by autoclaving glassware, solutions, and laboratory reagents involved in experiments
  • Help maintain a clean and organized laboratory space to ensure a safe and efficient working environment
  • Assist in training and guiding students in laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, reporting any issues as needed
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI) to support the overall success of research projects

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum B.Sc. degree in biology, veterinary medicine, or related
  • Minimum of 1 year of dedicated research experience in bacteriology
  • Preferred background as a lab or research technician
  • Essential prior experience in conducting bacteriologic analysis of animal samples
  • Desirable proficiency in handling both human and animal biological samples, including blood, milk, and feces
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and PeopleSoft
  • Strong organizational skills coupled with meticulous attention to detail
  • Critical ability to operate effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated robust analytical skills
  • Desired comprehensive understanding of lab safety practices, with a proactive commitment to ongoing education for continuous improvement
  • Ability to innovate and contribute inventive ideas to the Principal Investigator (PI) and fellow lab members
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ensuring effective interaction with a diverse range of collaborators (English fluency is required)
