Job summary

A regional educational institution is seeking a Special Education Technician for the Knowlton Academy. The role involves working with a multidisciplinary team to support students with learning difficulties and develop individualized learning plans. Candidates must hold relevant qualifications, be fluent in both French and English, and possess recent first aid certification. This is a replacement position with 28 working hours per week, from Monday to Friday.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Diploma of College Studies in Special Care Counselling or equivalent.
  • Certificate of successful completion of a standard first aid course (no more than 3 years old).
  • Minimum six-hour refresher course on first aid.

Nature of the work

The principal and customary work of an employee in this class of employment consists in working with a multidisciplinary team to apply special education techniques and methods in keeping with an individualized education plan intended for handicapped students or students with social maladjustments or learning difficulties or in keeping with a program designed for students requiring specific support.

Description of tasks
  • Under the responsibility of the school principal and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, participates in the development and drafting of the intervention plan;
  • Develops, organizes and leads educational, pedagogical, cultural, recreational and sports activities aimed at developing social, cognitive, psychomotor, communication and other skills;
  • Supports students in their learning and autonomy development;
  • Observes the situation and intervenes with students in response to their environment; supports the teacher in ensuring a classroom environment conducive to learning;
  • Uses communication techniques adapted to students' needs;
  • Records observations and interventions, keeps records and writes reports on student situations;
  • Collaborates, as needed, with youth protection agencies and other external stakeholders;
  • Meets with students, parents and teaching staff to advise, inform and provide relevant documentation and references;
  • Performs any other related duties as required.
Desired profile
Schooling

Hold a Diploma of College Studies in Special Care Counselling, or a diploma or attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

Other Requirements
  • Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of a standard first aid course of a minimum eight (8)-hour duration;
  • A refresher course of a minimum six (6)-hour duration updating the skills acquired in the course mentioned in subparagraph 1;
  • Fluent in French and English (written and spoken).
