About the Role

Our client, a globally recognized technology firm, is expanding its engineering team and seeking a highly experienced Senior Software Engineer specializing in Python and Django. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere within South Africa, but with a strong preference for candidates with an understanding of the local market nuances. You will be instrumental in designing, developing, and deploying robust backend services and APIs that form the core of our client's innovative platform. This role demands a deep understanding of scalable architectures, database design, and a commitment to writing high-quality, maintainable code. You'll collaborate with a distributed team of talented engineers, product managers, and designers, driving technical excellence and product innovation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable Python/Django code for backend services and APIs.
• Develop and integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic, ensuring a seamless user experience.
• Architect and implement scalable solutions capable of handling high volumes of traffic and data.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.
• Write comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure code quality and robustness.
• Optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability.
• Identify and address performance bottlenecks and bugs.
• Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and promoting best practices.
• Contribute to technical decision-making and architectural discussions.
• Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge within the team.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on Python.
• Proven expertise in developing backend applications using the Django framework.
• Deep understanding of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORM technologies.
• Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Familiarity with front-end technologies (e.g., JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, Vue.js) is a plus.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Strong understanding of software development best practices, including testing, version control (Git), and CI/CD.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote setting.
• Experience working within South African time zones and understanding local business context is highly valued.
