NVA Canada is looking for a part-/full-time Veterinary Technician at Prescott Animal Hospital in Eastern Ontario. Job description

We, at Prescott Animal Hospital, like to challenge the status quo by striving for excellence in our delivery of "Care and Comfort for Pets and People". We are seeking a part-/full-time VT or RVT; new grads are welcome. Valued attributes include demonstrating leadership, initiative, and accountability. Candidates must be willing to work evenings, Saturdays, and on-call schedules. The successful individual must bring a positive atmosphere to the workplace, work as a team player to help bring out the best in other team members and commit to continued education. Our practice offers CE, uniform allowance, health benefits and covers OAVT dues. Salary is based on experience.

Position Type And Expected Hours Of Work
  • 8 hour shifts Monday–Friday, including evenings (Mondays & Wednesdays rotation 12pm‑8pm)
  • Saturday shifts required (once monthly)
  • On call as scheduled by Manager (No more than 3 weekends/year)
Education And Experience
  • Veterinary Technician Registration in the province of Ontario is required
Competency
Technical Skills
  • Obtain and record patient histories and data into Avimark computer software system
  • Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
  • Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian.
  • Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill patients.
  • Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery.
  • Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, anesthetic monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.
  • Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of high‑tech diagnostic equipment including electrocardiographic, radiographic and ultrasonographic equipment.
  • Take and process radiographs.
  • Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education on vaccines, flea, tick and heartworm products, and assist in marketing veterinary services such as dental cleaning, senior wellness, spay and neuter.
  • Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.
  • Receive, handle and treat patients with skill, compassion and care including: monitoring during anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery and general and specialized nursing care.
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications including MS Office (Word).
  • Ability to navigate and utilize Allydvm program
Basic Skills
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the full variety of treatments to make preparations and provide "tableside" assistance.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client and personal services. This includes client needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of client satisfaction.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness, and the ability to multi‑task are essential functions in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures and operating instructions for making appointments, assembling patient medical records, recording test results, relaying information regarding patient’s condition, and compiling and submitting data on patients treated.
  • Shows compassion for others, patients and clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Teaches others how to perform a task.
  • Actively looks for ways to help others.
Communication
  • Educate clients on products and medications sold including dietary products and answer questions regarding product purchase/use.

  • Strong English communication and client service skills. Considerable tact and diplomacy is required. Ability to communicate with clients in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner in all modes of communication, i.e., telephone, e‑mail, letters etc.
  • Requires active listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Be self‑aware of one’s own and others’ responses in conflict. Requires face‑to‑face discussions with individuals or team members.
  • Work well with other employees and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and the practice values and philosophy.
  • Ability to adjust actions in relation to other’s actions. Display respect to other team members, clients and patients.
