Purpose of Position :
To perform laboratory tests, collect specimens, and report results to Patient Care Providers, with interpretation as required within the parameters defined by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists and other applicable regulatory bodies.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Perform laboratory procedures as indicated in department manuals, following hospital and laboratory policies.
- Work in one or more laboratory subsections, such as Transfusion Services, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Histology, and Hematology.
- Remain current in laboratory medicine and participate in continuing education programs as required by the CMLTO or other regulatory bodies.
- Communicate with Patient Care Providers on laboratory matters and exercise independent judgment in specimen procurement, analysis, reporting, and interpretation of findings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Staffing and Licensing Requirements :
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with a relevant major in chemical, physical, or biological sciences from an accredited university and have at least one year of employment as a laboratory technician in an approved laboratory; or
- Be recognized as a technologist by a Canadian (CMLTO, CSMLS), British (HCPC), or U.S. (ASCP, NCA) professional society, with courses approved by the Director; or
- Obtain a diploma as a laboratory technologist from an Ontario Community College; or
- Possess equivalent education or experience approved by the Director.
Minimum experience includes one year of clinical training in an approved program and one year of related work in a laboratory setting.
