The Chest Unit at St. Joseph’s Health System in Hamilton is a 37-bed acute surgical unit providing care for thoracic and related surgeries.

The role requires Nursing registration in Ontario and a Practical Nursing Diploma with IV administration training. Responsibilities include IV therapies, medication administration, and collaboration with an interprofessional team to deliver patient- and family-centered care in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Practical Nursing Diploma with IV medication administration training.
• Minimum one year acute surgical/medical nursing experience.
• BCLS/HCP certification required.
• Ability to work in a changing fast-paced interdisciplinary team.
• Venipuncture competency and analgesia administration training as required.
• Orientation completion and ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care in the Chest Unit (37 beds) including thoracic and surgical patients.
• Administer medications, IV therapies, and pain management procedures.
• Collaborate with interprofessional team to plan and adjust patient care.
• Support seniors and families, maintain documentation and care plans.

The unit houses the Regional Thoracics Centre for our area as well as our Head and Neck and the Surgical Stepdown Units (SSDU). Specialty medical and surgical services support patients with newly diagnosed disease including thoracic and head and neck cancer reconstructive and plastic surgery and the care of patients with progressive illness. Our 8-bed SSDU provides care for acutely ill surgical patients including those undergoing thoracic orthopaedic urology gynecology GI and General Surgical procedures.
