Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Ottawa is seeking a skilled professional in Geriatric Psychiatry to assess and treat mental illnesses in older adults. You'll work collaboratively with families and the community to enhance quality of life. Candidates must have a nursing diploma, be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario, and possess specific technical skills. Experience with geriatric patients is preferred, and fluency in English and French is required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
  • Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
  • Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • English level A- is mandatory.

Job description
Geriatric Psychiatry

This program assesses and treats mental illnesses in adults over 65. It focuses on improving quality of life and recovery for older adults dealing with conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias. Care is provided in collaboration with families, primary care providers, and community agencies.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
  • Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
  • Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Technical skills such as glucometer reading, vital signs, injection skills, physical assessment/mental health assessment, catheterization, medication administration, O2 administration, basic wound care, suctioning, safe patient handling, bladder scanning, ECT recovery, skin care and feeding
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relations with patients
  • Ability to function as a member of the inter-disciplinary team
  • Basic computer skills required
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression/comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. French level A- is mandatory in oral expression and oral comprehension.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training
  • Knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques
  • 2 years recent experience with older adults with psychiatric/mental health illness
