Job summary

North York General Hospital is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse with Endoscopy experience to join the team on a part‑time basis. You will work 8‑hour days/evenings in the Endoscopy department, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to ensure patient‑centered care and safe procedural support.

Ideal candidates have at least 2 years Endoscopy experience, 1–3 years acute postoperative OR nursing, and hold a current RPN license with BCLS.

Qualifications

  • Registered Practical Nursing certification in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • BCLS certification required.
  • Minimum 2 years Endoscopy Suite experience.
  • 1–3 years acute post-operative surgical or Operating Room nursing experience preferred.
  • Perioperative Nursing Certificate preferred.
  • Physical Assessment course preferred.
  • Medication Administration course preferred.
  • Venipuncture and phlebotomy skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care within the full scope of nursing practice per Ontario standards.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and health care team.
  • Assist physician with endoscopy and related procedures.
  • Set up, use and turnover of endoscopy/procedural rooms.
  • Monitor patient condition during inter‑operative phase and document changes.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and quality improvement.
  • Support a family‑centered care environment and public relations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with computers and patient information systems.

Position Summary

Registered Practical Nurse, Endoscopy Your goal in this position is to provide clinical competence, excellent patient and family driven care, in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. You will do this by collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of care providers, with an emphasis on the assessment, education, prevention, maintenance, and restoration of patient health. You’re a great relationship builder, and foster close contacts with peers across the entire organization. You have great interpersonal skills, and effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families. On a practical level, you will
  • Demonstrated ability to function to the full scope of nursing practice per the College of Nurse of Ontario
  • Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients/clients, families and other members of the health care team
  • Think critically, set priorities and organize work in response to client/patient needs
  • Have skills, knowledge and competency with assisting physician with endoscopy and other procedures.
  • Be skillful in the proper use, care, and handling of the endoscopic and other procedural equipment.
  • Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patients’ condition during the inter-operative stage of the procedure, collaboratively and in conjunction with the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
  • Be experienced in endoscope cleaning and handling and care as well as the setup and turnover of procedure rooms.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of transfers and lifts
  • Be committed to ongoing learning, professional development, and continuous quality improvement
  • Foster good public relations and working relationships in a family centered care environment
  • Demonstrate your ability to perform appropriately in emergency situations
  • Have proficient skill level with computers, MS Word, Internet searches, data entry and patient information systems
  • Demonstrate evidence of self- motivation regarding continuing education in areas of patient assessment, and patient education.
Qualifications

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required
  • Minimum 2 years Endoscopy Suite experience, required
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of acute post-operative surgical or Operating Room nursing experience preferred
  • Perioperative Nursing Certificate preferred
  • Physical Assessment course preferred
  • Medication Administration course preferred
  • Venipuncture IV certification and phlebotomy skills preferred
