This is a temporary contract position for up to Eighteen (18) months

This encompasses refining skills in postpartum assessment, lactation support, providing emotional support to new parents, newborn care, and educating patients on postpartum recovery. This pathway is designed to enhance your capabilities in both postpartum and neonatal assessments, along with patient education, thereby improving the care experience for families in our Mother Baby unit. About the Mother Baby Program
Our Mother Baby Program includes our High Risk Antenatal unit and our Mother Baby Unit. Nurses working on our Mother Baby unit provide care to postpartum patients and their stable neonates as well as postpartum patients with a baby in NICU.


In this role you will:

  • Demonstrate the College of Nurses of Ontario Entry to Practice Competencies for Registered Practical Nurses (June 2023)
  • Possess the requisite knowledge, skills, judgment and attitude to deliver competent and evidence-based nursing care
  • Meet the nursing professional standards and exercises judgment for providing safe, competent and ethical nursing care
  • Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for their own decisions and actions and practices within their own level of competence
  • Determine the need for and initiates consultation and collaboration with intra and interdisciplinary team members including Registered Nurses in a timely and supportive manner
  • Continuously gather and analyze clinical and other relevant data to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care and adjusts the plan as needed
  • Work collaboratively with patients, families, caregivers and the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Provide health education using effective teaching strategies that takes into account the patient/family's learning needs, readiness, and motivation to learn
  • Contribute to discharge and transition planning and other planning activities to facilitate care continuity and coordination; advocate for care needs to be met in most appropriate setting
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to nursing learners and new staff
  • Utilize critical inquiry, critical thinking and research to develop evidence-informed practice and inform decision-making
  • Develop expertise in their area of practice through self-reflection, self-learning, specialty certification and implementation of best practice guidelines.
  • Be committed to patient safety and quality responsibilities in accordance with hospital vision, policies and procedures
  • Contribute to achieving Sinai Health’s strategic and operational priorities through a commitment to continuous quality improvement, patient/staff safety, professional development and continuing education
  • Contribute to Sinai’s work by participating actively in hospital committees and other groups to represent the RPN perspective
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

Mandatory

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing (PN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Active Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) advanced provider status; applicants not currently NRP certified may be considered – as a condition of hire, the NRP course must be successfully completed within three (3) months of hire
  • Infant feeding Course & Infant feeding skills; applicants not currently enrolled in an Infant feeding program may be considered – as a condition of hire the Infant feeding course must be successfully completed within three (3) months of hire

Preferred

  • Preference will be given to applicants with recent Mother Baby Program or recent related experience. Consideration may also be given to nursing graduates who have completed their practicum consolidation in the Mother Baby Program
  • Completion of, or current enrollment in a perinatal certificate course (college-level) or Canadian Nurses’ Associations (CNA) Perinatal Certification. Applicants with less than one 1year of perinatal experience must commit to obtaining their perinatal certificate within 18 months from their date of hire
  • Perinatal Bereavement Course. This course must be successfully completed within three 3months of hire
  • Successful completion of S.T.A.B.L.E/Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) course

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent health and clinical assessment skills
  • Demonstrated ability in providing quality patient-focused care and addressing the fundamental care needs of patients and their families
  • Proven ability to make sound professional judgements and practice decisions and demonstrate effective time-management and organizational skills in a fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Experience using an electronic health record an asset
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others including patients and their families
  • Computer proficiency and/or Basic to Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (e.g. Word, Outlook)
  • Demonstrated satisfactory job performance and attendance history required
  • Familiarity with:
    • CNO Code of Conduct and Professional Standards
    • Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991
