Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse to join the acute inpatient mental health unit. The RPN will contribute to psychiatric nursing care, assessments, group therapies and discharge planning in a dynamic, patient-centered environment.

Working in collaboration with an experienced interdisciplinary team, you will practice evidence-based care, adhere to safety protocols, and coordinate care with patients and families in a state-of-the-art facility.

Registered Practical Nurses possess a definedbody of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers. The Registered Practical Nurse is responsible for the provision of comprehensive psychiatric nursing care, including assessment of patients and families, group therapies, discharge planning and coordination on an acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit and in the MHEAZ (Mental Health Emergency Assessment Zone) of the Emergency Department. The RPN may also be required to work in other mental health services and programs, based on operational needs.

EDUCATION

• Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Completion of a mental health nursing course from accredited college, or a commitment to attend and complete the education within one year of hire.
• Training with cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, solution focused therapy and group therapy an asset.
• Life skill certificate is an asset.

Qualifications

• 2 years of recent experience in an acute care mental health setting.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to and execute multidisciplinary plans of care.
• Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
• Sound knowledge of counseling and therapeutic techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements including the collection of workload statistics.
• Demonstrated ability to use cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, solution focused therapy, and group therapy skills.
• Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated understanding of accountability based practice.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Good work and attendance record required.
