St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse for the Acute Medical Unit in St. Thomas, Ontario.

The role involves establishing therapeutic relationships, assessing health needs, and planning, implementing and evaluating patient care in a fast-paced acute setting. Ideal candidates will be registered with the Ontario College of Nurses, hold a current BLS certification, and demonstrate strong critical thinking and medication administration skills.

Qualifications

• Registered Practical Nurse currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Current BLS Certification.
• Ability to practice at full scope with appropriate education or experience.
• Strong assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills for acute medical nursing.

Responsibilities

• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families and assess health needs.
• Plan, implement and evaluate patient care in acute medical units.
• Provide nursing care with independence and critical thinking.
• Administer medications as ordered, including IV medications.
• Document and communicate clearly with the care team and EPR systems.
• Commit to ongoing professional development and attendance policies.

Salary Range: $40.12 To $40.53 Hourly

Posting Dates: October 23, 2026 to October 29, 2026

Contract Dates: November 16, 2026 to January 3, 2028 (may be extended or end sooner)

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The RPN is responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families through application of specialized knowledge, skill and judgement, both in assessing health needs and in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.

• Registered Practical Nurse, currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Registered Practical Nurse certificate or education and experience that allows the RPN to practice at full scope
• Current BLS Certification
• Proven assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills related to acute medical nursing with the ability to work independently, utilizing critical thinking skillset
• Basic computer skills (Outlook email, Cerner, Electronic Patient Record)
• Capability to administer medication inclusive of IV medication administration, with a physician’s order
• Ability to assess, adapt and respond within a constantly changing environment
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing/continuous professional development
• Excellent attendance record in alignment with STEGH’s attendance policy
• Acceptable performance record in alignment with STEGH’s mission, vision, values and code of conduct

WHAT WE PREFER YOU HAVE:

• One (1) year of Acute Medical Care experience within the last three (3) years
• Palliative Care Fundamentals (Level 1)
• Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) and P.I.E.C.E.S certification

HOURS:

The successful candidate must be available to work all tours applicable to the department in accordance with the availability and non-availability requirements outlined in the OPSEU Service Collective Agreement. In addition, this position must be flexible to occasional changes in hours when required to meet the operational needs of the department.
