Job description
Geriatric Psychiatry

This program assesses and treats mental illnesses in adults over 65. It focuses on improving quality of life and recovery for older adults dealing with conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, Alzheimeru2019s disease, and other dementias. Care is provided in collaboration with families, primary care providers, and community agencies.

Qualifications
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Up to 3 months Nursing Experience
  • Knowledge of mental health/addiction issues
  • Clear understanding of MHA and relevant legislation
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice
  • Knowledge of mental health/addiction issues with specific knowledge about physical/medical compilations related to mental health and addictions
  • Able to meet the standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses
  • CPR certification within the last 12 months (BCLS at a minimum)
  • Evidence of continuing professional education
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills
  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Problem solving, leadership and management skills in responding to complex and rapidly changing situations
  • Sensitivity, skills and experience working with diverse individuals and communities
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
  • Experience in Mental Health and/or addictions
  • Membership and active participation in a professional nursing organization (RNAO)
  • Certification in Gerontology
  • Gentle Persuasive approach 9GPA) training, P.I.E.C.E.S training or other related dementia care training
  • Knowledge of changes associated with the aging process
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology and program which complicate drug therapy with seniors
