Job summary

Providence Health Care is seeking a compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Palliative Care team at St. Paul’s Hospital.

The RN provides holistic, patient- and family-centred nursing care to individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the RN assesses patient needs, develops and implements individualized care plans, and supports patients and families in meeting their physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.

Qualifications

• Current practising registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
• CPR competence demonstrated.
• Experience in teamwork, decision-making and conflict resolution.
• Demonstrated teaching aptitude.
• Proficient clinical leadership and lifelong learning.

Responsibilities

• Reviews patient/resident status through charts, observations, interviews, and team collaboration.
• Assesses needs, develops care plans, and delivers care using clinical judgment and evidence-based practice.
• Delivers nursing care in alignment with established policies, procedures, and standards.
• Monitors progress, evaluates outcomes, and adjusts care plans as needed.
• Documents assessments, care plans, patient status, and reports changes to appropriate staff.
• Responds to crises and provides interventions in life-threatening situations.
• Supports patient and family education, including teaching and health promotion.
• Guides and supports care staff, promoting teamwork and effective task coordination.
• Participates in education, training, quality improvement, and research activities.
• Facilitates discharge planning, advocates for patient rights, and performs additional duties as required.

Working within an interdisciplinary team and guided by the standards of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, the RN promotes comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients receiving palliative care. Responsibilities include patient assessment, care planning, education for patients and families, collaboration with healthcare professionals, and contributing to a safe, respectful care environment aligned with the mission and values of Providence Health Care.

This role is ideal for nurses who are passionate about compassionate end-of-life care and teamwork in a supportive clinical environment.

What You Bring

Education:

Locations:

• St. Paul’s Hospital (10D) *Acute : Palliative care focuses more on acute pain and symptom management needs. Many patients may go home after their time in palliative care or transfer to hospice or long‑term care.
• May’s Place (6 beds) *Sub‑Acute : Downtown Eastside, where people have problems with mental health and substance abuse.
• St. John’s Hospice (14 beds) *Sub‑Acute: Hospice care is intended for those who are going through their last days of life and are receiving care for end of life. The first community hospice on Vancouver's West Side and is situated in a beautiful location on the University of British Columbia's campus.

Your Day to Day:
