Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards and Fraser Health values, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care in an acute medical unit. The RN assesses, plans, and evaluates nursing care to provide person-centered care.

Responsibilities
  1. Assesses patients and collects information using observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment. Makes a nursing diagnosis and determines appropriate nursing interventions.
  2. Collaborates with patients and families to develop and implement the care plan, encouraging family participation and respecting patient autonomy.
  3. Participates in care and discharge planning, ensuring the care plan is established, updated, and effectively communicated with the interprofessional team.
  4. Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, delegates tasks, and makes referrals according to protocols.
  5. Collaborates with Physicians, LPNs, Patient Care Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other professionals to resolve issues and adjust care plans.
  6. Teaches patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance to help achieve health goals.
  7. Plans and discusses referrals with patients and families; initiates referrals to appropriate community agencies.
  8. Documents assessments, diagnoses, observations, interventions, outcomes, and referrals per standards.
  9. Participates in committees, care conferences, and councils.
  10. Engages in research and quality improvement activities.
  11. Attends in-services and educational programs; maintains clinical competence.
  12. Acts as preceptor or mentor to new staff and students.
  13. Provides feedback to management regarding patient care programs.
  14. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse. Completion of Cardiology component of Post Basic Critical Care course or equivalent, plus one year recent experience in cardiac monitoring or telemetry unit. Current Basic Rescuer Certificate.
