Who we are

The Yukon Midwifery Program is a collaborative group practice of autonomous Registered Midwives (RMs) who will work as employees at the Department of Health and Social Services under the Integrated Health Services branch. Midwifery services are delivered through the Yukon Midwifery Program Clinic at 9010 Quartz Road, at the Whitehorse General Hospital, and in a range of community settings, including clients’ homes. Yukon Registered Midwives (RMs) work closely with physicians, nurses, medical office assistants, counsellors, and other health and social professionals. RMs are responsible for maintaining a practice environment that is inclusive, non-discriminatory, and physically, psychologically, and culturally safe.

Who we are looking for

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of Midwifery, RMs provide prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal health care to individuals and their babies. They provide comprehensive, primary health care including health assessments, diagnoses, interventions, and follow-up care. A RM may be the first point of entry to maternity services and are fully responsible for the clinical decision making and the management of care within their scope of practice. They ensure consistent and quality culturally safe, relationship-based midwifery care that contributes to the achievement of optimal maternal and child health outcomes for pregnant Yukoners in their care.

Important application and job requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery, or equivalent assessed through a Prior Learning Experience Assessment (PLEA) program or Bridging Program in a Canadian province
  • Current registration in good standing or eligibility to register as a Registered Midwife with a Canadian regulatory authority, and eligibility to register and qualify for Yukon Midwifery Licensing
  • Recently applied knowledge of evidence-based midwifery theory, practices, techniques, and risk management acquired through work experience as a Registered Midwife
  • Demonstrated Northern, remote or rural experience providing midwifery care is an asset

Conditions of employment
  • Valid Class 5 Yukon Drivers License or equivalent
  • Current TB screening
  • Proof of required degree or certificate
  • Current registration in good standing as a Registered Midwife with a Canadian regulatory authority
  • Completion of Yukon Midwifery Licensing prior to commencement and maintenance thereafter
  • Current satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check
  • Minimum three satisfactory professional references, one of which could be the Chief of Medical Services or Senior Medical Administrator of the organization of most recent employment
  • Prior to commencement, the applicant must sign/accept the terms and conditions of the Yukon Hospital Corporations Hospital Act, its Regulations, and Bylaws in order to obtain hospital privileges
  • Hospital privileges must be maintained annually as prescribed by Yukon Hospital Corporation’s Bylaws and Regulations
Job requirements
  • Ability to share 24/7 first and second on call coverage with the team of Registered Midwives.
  • Ability to travel within the territory to support community operations outside of Whitehorse, and engage with stakeholders; potential need to attend conferences and workshops both within and outside of Yukon
