Job Title: Recreation Therapist
Chinook Lodge, Cardston & Pioneer Lodge, Fort Macleod | Part-time
Overview
The Recreation Therapist is responsible for conducting therapeutic assessments and implementing individualized recreation programs for Type B residents—those requiring higher levels of care—at Chinook Lodge in Cardston and Pioneer Lodge in Fort Macleod. The therapist will work one day per week (8-hour shift) at each site as a contractor to Cartwright Cares.
In addition, the Recreation Therapist contributes to general lodge-wide programming at both locations while maintaining professional relationships with residents and staff. This role supports the emotional, physical, and social well-being of residents through structured, goal-oriented activities.
The Recreation Therapist works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary teams at both sites to ensure care for Type B residents is delivered in a manner that respects dignity, independence, privacy, preferences, and safety within a home-like environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Activity Coordinator and Site Managers at both lodges to plan and deliver lodge-wide recreational programming, including one-on-one and small group activities.
- Support inclusive programming that reflects and respects the diverse needs of all residents across both sites.
- Participate in disciplinary or behavioral management only when part of a therapeutic plan approved by the Activity Coordinator and Site Manager.
- Report observed resident concerns or health changes to the appropriate Site Manager or Department Team Leader.
- Promote teamwork by actively contributing as a supportive and reliable team member at each location.
- Deliver quality services in accordance with Type B service authorizations, ensuring alignment with policies and funding requirements.
- Participant Assessment and Planning: Conduct thorough assessments of residents’ needs, preferences, and abilities upon entry to the program and periodically thereafter. Develop individualized goals and strategies to support well-being. An understanding of the APIED process is an asset.
- Supervision and Leadership: Oversee volunteers or possible student interns, providing guidance and mentorship to ensure safe and effective program delivery.
- Compliance and Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation related to resident participation, progress, incidents, and program outcomes in accordance with organizational policies and legislation.
- Quality Improvement: Regularly evaluate program effectiveness at both sites, gather feedback, and implement improvements to enhance resident outcomes.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy/Therapeutic Recreation. Registration with NCTRC, ATRA, or CTRA is an asset.
- Clinical Knowledge: Familiarity with therapeutic techniques, disabilities, and best practices in recreation therapy for seniors or individuals requiring higher levels of care.
- Leadership Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Creativity and Problem Solving: Ability to design and adapt programming to meet evolving resident needs.
- Organizational Skills: Excellent time management with the ability to work independently across two sites.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to participate in activities involving standing, walking, and assisting residents as needed.
Requirements
- Valid First Aid/CPR-C certification
- Current Criminal Record Check (within the past 6 months)
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel between Cardston and Fort Macleod
- Completion of worksite Confidentiality Agreement(s)
- If resident transportation is required, a driver’s abstract and appropriate insurance will be requested
Working Conditions
- This position is based across two locations: Cardston and Fort Macleod, Alberta (with the occasional request to attend Cartwright Cares office in Coleman, Alberta).
- One 8-hour shift per week at each site
- Occasional flexibility in scheduling may be required
- Moderate physical activity and direct resident interaction
