Job summary

Bank of Montreal (BMO) is offering a 12‑month co‑op on the Alpha Research Team in Canada. You will help build data pipelines, research technology for stock forecasting, and translate quantitative ideas into investable capabilities.

The role collaborates with quantitative researchers, analysts, portfolio managers, and data engineering to deliver practical solutions across investment workflows. Completion of the third year and strong Python/SQL skills are required.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate co‑op program and has completed their third year.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL through coursework, internships, co‑op, or projects.
  • Experience with structured/unstructured data, validation, transformation and analysis.
  • Familiarity with OO programming, modular design, testing, version control, and maintainable code.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and collaborative mindset.
  • Interest in quantitative finance, investment research, or technology-enabled portfolios.
  • Exposure to Pandas, Polars, DuckDB, Spark, or similar data‑processing tools.
  • Knowledge of AWS/Azure/GCP, APIs, microservices, or data‑integration frameworks.
  • Experience with Git, code reviews, automated testing, or CI/CD workflows.
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts and experimentation is a plus.
  • Experience with financial datasets, portfolio analytics, or risk models is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Research Platform Development: build and enhance tools and libraries for forecasting, research, factor modeling, portfolio analytics, ML workflows, and analytics.
  • Data Engineering & Integration: support data pipelines, ingestion, validation, transformation, and distribution of datasets; ensure data quality.
  • Application & Tool Development: create dashboards, APIs, utilities, and analytical apps for research and portfolio workflows.
  • Research Implementation: translate models and signals into reliable, reusable code with good documentation.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: assist deployment, automation, monitoring, and operation for solutions in cloud or on‑prem environments.
  • Software Engineering Practices: participate in code reviews, testing, documentation, version control, and CI/CD to improve reliability.
  • Cross‑Team Collaboration: gather requirements and deliver solutions with investment and tech teams.
  • Continuous Improvement: explore new frameworks and tools to boost team capabilities.
