We are seeking an experienced and meticulousQuality Control (QC) Inspector/Estimatorto join our steel fabrication shop.
In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring all products produced in the facility meet and exceed both the company’s and our customers' standards. This is a critical, hands‑on role that involves performing all inspection activities, maintaining required documentation, and assisting in the development of QC procedures.
This hybrid position is also responsible forproject estimating, requiring you to develop accurate bids for structural steel and platework projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background as anEngineering Technologist, with extensive experience in fabrication, quality control, and estimating.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Control:
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintainingthe shop's Quality Control procedures and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
- Process, read, and interpretcomplex engineering design drawings and specifications to understand the full scope of work and all quality requirements.
- Manage material receiving byinspecting all incoming materials and associated Material Test Reports (MTRs), ensuring they match purchase orders and specifications.
- Perform and oversee in‑process and finaldimension and detail checksduring fabrication to ensure all components are built to drawing specifications.
- Coordinate andoversee all Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT)processes, reviewing all reports for compliance.
- Record all process stepsand inspections as outlined in the quality manual and project‑specific requirements.
- Maintain a detailed recordof all materials, procedures (WPS/PQR), and welder/fitter certifications.
- Create, verify, and complete all final project turnover packages andproduce accurate shipping documents.
- Supervise the loading of finished products, ensuring they are handled correctly and secured for transport.
Estimating:
- Lead or assist in theestimating of structural steel and plateworkprojects.
- Perform detailed material take‑offs from engineering drawings and specifications.
- Develop accurate labor, material, and equipment cost calculations for project bids.
General:
- Act as a primary technical point of contact for clients, engineers, and third‑party inspectors regarding all quality matters.
- Maintain astrong customer service orientationand build positive, collaborative relationships with the internal team (shop floor, project managers) and external clients.
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Post‑secondary diploma or degree inEngineering Technology (Mechanical, Civil, or a related field).
- Minimum 3‑5 years of progressive experience in a steel fabrication shop, with direct involvement in both Quality Control and Estimating.
- Proven experience withstructural steel and plateworkfabrication.
- Demonstrated experience inproject estimating, including material take‑offs and labor calculations.
- Expert‑level ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and technical specifications.
- Strong knowledge of welding processes, fabrication standards, and relevant codes (e.g., CWB, ASME).
- Demonstrated experience in performing inspections and maintaining QC documentation.
- Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- High proficiency in theMicrosoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project)for data management and reporting.
- Proficiency increating and reviewing 2D AutoCAD drawings.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build positive relationships.
Preferred Assets:
- Formal QC certifications, such asCWB Welding Inspector (Level 1 or 2), are highly preferred.
- In‑depth knowledge ofstructural steel detailingpractices.
- Experience withpipingfabrication and associated codes.
