Job description

The Municipality of Grassland invites applications for the full-time permanent position of Public Works Labourer. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day delivery of municipal services, with most work taking place in the Town of Hartney.

Working under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Public Works Labourer will be responsible for operating municipal equipment, performing routine maintenance and supporting a wide range of municipal operations—from garbage collection to assisting with utility tasks and cemetery work.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate municipal equipment such as mowers, tractors and loaders
  • Perform weekly garbage collection in the Town of Hartney
  • Assist the Utilities Lead with utility tasks and cover duties during absences
  • Carry out manual labour including lifting, digging, and material handling
  • Dig graves for cremations at Riverside Cemetery
  • Conduct maintenance and repair work on municipal buildings and properties
  • Support special projects such as beautification efforts, public event setups, and emergency response
  • Maintain accurate records of daily tasks and equipment use
  • Assist with supervision of summer students and seasonal staff
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for the Hartney, Elgin and Minto Water Treatment Plants
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain certification through the Water and Wastewater Operators Certification Program. This certification is a condition of employment and must be achieved within a designated time frame as determined by the municipality.
