Position Purpose

The Public Services Librarian manages, promotes and delivers library services to the Tyndale community by providing a full range of information services, including reference, instruction, and access to information and research resources.

Primary Responsibilities
Leadership
  • Establish and implement short and long-range departmental goals.
  • In collaboration with the University Librarian, recruit, develop, motivate, lead, and mentor direct reports (including student workers).
  • Ensure the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of department team members (including student workers) are based on agreed-upon measurable objectives, and corrective action is taken where necessary.
  • Ensure the duties of the Public Services team are carried out in compliance with the Library’s and Tyndale’s policies and procedures.
  • Create and sustain an environment of excellence and professionalism in customer service and teamwork.
Reference and Instruction
  • Actively promote the Library and its services to students and faculty.
  • Respond to reference and research questions in person, or by phone, email or other electronic means.
  • Teach information literacy skills to students and faculty by means of Library workshops and in-class Library sessions and online tutorials.
  • Coordinate Library orientation sessions and tours.
  • Create and update online Library Research Guides.
Public Services Administration
  • Supervise and coordinate all aspects of Public Services for Tyndale Library including desk coverage, library signage, circulation policies and procedures.
  • Manage personal requests, lost books, outstanding accounts, and other customer service matters.
  • Oversee the general appearance of the Library, recommending needed changes. Compile an annual report on the Public Services department.
General Library Assistance
  • Select resources for the Library collection in accordance with the collection development policy in areas assigned by the University Librarian.
  • Work on other professional projects as assigned by the University Librarian.

Duties and responsibilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.

Position Qualifications
a) Education

Advanced academic background in theological and Biblical studies, preferred. Advanced academic background in theological and Biblical studies, preferred. Master’s degree in library / information science from an ALA‑accredited institution, Master's degree (six to seven year program) or equivalent, (MA, MBA, MSW, CPA)

b) Experience

Experience providing reference/instructional services in an academic setting 2 to 3 years related experience
