Job summary

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is seeking a certified Public Health Inspector to join the Health Protection Division on a full-time permanent basis. The role involves enforcing provincial acts and regulations to protect community health, with responsibilities including inspections, plan reviews, and on-call duties.

Applicants must hold a Bachelors in Environmental Health, current PHI certification, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Environmental Health or equivalent.
• Current Certification in Public Health Inspection.
• Certification or ability to obtain Ontario Building Code certification within required timeframe.
• Minimum 2 years experience in public health inspection.
• Experience with Health Protection and Promotion Act and related regulations is an asset.
• Hedgehog Inspection program experience is an asset.
• Bilingual in English/French is an asset.
• Valid Ontario driver’s license with access to a vehicle.
• Police reference check as per policy.
• MOHL Health and Safety Awareness certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Review plans, inspect, evaluate and enforce compliance with legislation.
• Enforce legislation under Health Protection & Promotion Act and related Acts.
• Respond to after-hours calls; serve as on-call inspector as assigned.
• Investigate cases and outbreaks of enteric diseases; provide follow-up.

Location: Manitoulin Island office, 6163 Highway 542, Mindemoya

Current Work Location Arrangement: Partial On-site – The position requires a combination of regular on-site and remote work. Reasons and schedules can vary, but worker attends on-site regularly (for example, each week).

Salary: $42.92 – $48.27/hour (as per CUPE collective agreement)

Additional Compensation:

• Relocation allowance (i.e. moving expenses) available.
• A retention allowance in the amount of $300.00 per month will be provided to the successful applicant(s) whose formal assignment is to work on Manitoulin Island.

Position summary

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is currently seeking a certified Public Health Inspector to work in the Health Protection Division.

Reporting to the Manager, the Public Health Inspector promotes and protects individual and community health through education and enforcement of pertinent provincial Acts and Regulations, municipal by-laws, and agency policies. Legislation includes theHealth Protection and Promotion Act,theHealthy Menu Choices Act,theSkin Cancer Prevention Act,theOntario Building Code Act,theProvincial Offences Act,and theSmoke-Free Ontario Actas well as relevant Regulations.

The Public Health Inspector is responsible for taking action to reduce the incidence of communicable disease and health hazards in the community.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical expertise and field support for all programs by reviewing plans, inspecting, evaluating, and applying requirements to ensure compliance with pertinent legislation.
• Using theProvincial Offences Act, acts as a Provincial Offences Officer to enforce legislation under theHealth Protection & Promotion Act, theHealthy Menu Choices Act, theSkin Cancer Prevention Act, theSmoke-Free Ontario Act, theBuilding Code Act, and their respective Regulations.
• Responds to after-hours calls and acts as an in-office duty inspector and after-hours on-call inspector as assigned.
• Investigates cases and outbreaks of enteric diseases and provides follow-up as required.
• Develops and presents training courses and workshops to food handlers, pool operators, small drinking water system operators, and other sectors as needed using appropriate teaching aids.
• Contributes to the development of program plans and develops, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates assigned projects in consultation with the manager and other team members as required.
• Excellent organizational abilities and technical competence with a high degree of initiative.
• Ability to work co-operatively and effectively in a multi-disciplinary work environment.
• Demonstrated computer skills.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Health or its equivalent.
• Current Certification in Public Health Inspection from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
• Current certification or ability to obtain certification in specified time frame as required by the Ontario Building Code (this is a requirement only for permanent Public Health Inspectors).
• Minimum of 2 years experience in public health inspection.
• Experience enforcing theHealth Protection and Promotion Act, theHealthy Menu Choices Act, theSkin Cancer Prevention Act, Part 8 of theOntario Building Code Act, theProvincial Offences Act, and theSmoke- Free Ontario Actas well as relevant Regulations is an asset.
• Experience using the Hedgehog Inspection program is considered an asset.
• Proficiency in both official languages is an asset.
• Maintains current Ontario driver’s license and has access to a reliable vehicle with agency required insurance to fulfill position requirements.
• Satisfactory police reference check in accordance with agency policy.
• Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
