Qualifications

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice, the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively with the interprofessional care team, the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse performs intake assessments, offers crisis intervention, and provides input into the care of psychiatric and concurrent disordered patients in the Emergency Department. The role involves ensuring effective patient flow, collaborating with various healthcare providers, and assisting in adapting care plans to address psychiatric needs, with final dispositions authorized by physicians or psychiatrists. The nurse works closely with community mental health teams, agencies, and may provide short-term follow-up and case management services at the Mental Health Centre.

Responsibilities
  1. Screens psychiatric referrals, gathers background information, and determines service priorities. Works with Emergency Department staff to identify potential psychiatric referrals.
  2. Performs psychosocial assessments, collects collateral information, and completes emergency psychiatry assessments for triaged patients.
  3. Develops care plans, provides crisis counseling, and offers short-term follow-up in line with treatment plans.
  4. Provides short-term follow-up and case management services at the Mental Health Centre for Emergency Department patients.
  5. Communicates with the interprofessional team on patient care, resources, discharge planning, and refers patients to other services as needed.
  6. Advocates for patients with other agencies and services.
  7. Documents assessments, care plans, interventions, responses, outcomes, and referrals according to standards and procedures.
  8. Maintains electronic contact sheets and participates in patient care conferences to ensure proper discharge planning and community linkage.
  9. Liaises with departments and professionals to facilitate transition to aftercare and assists patients and families in accessing community resources.
  10. Provides guidance and input on violence de-escalation, suicide prevention, seclusion, and restraint practices, ensuring safety and adherence to policies.
  11. Participates in quality improvement activities, identifies care issues, and suggests improvements.
  12. Provides input on policies and procedures, observing service needs and making recommendations.
  13. Identifies personal learning needs, engages in educational activities, and maintains clinical competency.
  14. Ensures a safe environment by following safety and emergency protocols.
  15. Participates in staff orientation and ongoing education, acting as a preceptor or mentor as appropriate.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Graduation from an approved Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing program. Current registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). At least one year of recent experience in acute or community mental health and substance use settings, or equivalent education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to perform mental health and substance use assessments and provide nursing care, including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatments.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology, including indications and side effects.
  • Skills in counseling and group facilitation.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation and policies related to mental health and substance use.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to promote person-centered, empathetic care, respecting diverse cultures and preferences, including advocacy for special populations.
  • Ability to educate patients and families about health topics.
  • Organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to collaborate within an interprofessional team.
  • Use of research-based evidence to support nursing decisions.
  • Proficiency with related equipment and computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform duties.
