PROTECTION AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGIST / / Greater Sudbury Hydro

Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc (GSHI) is a trusted electrical distribution company delivering safe and reliable electricity to the City of Greater Sudbury and West Nipissing. Responsibilities

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor Technical Services the Protection and Control Technician will install commission and maintain SCADA Load Control Distribution Automation Substation Protective Relaying-Metering Control and the Communication Networks for these systems. They will participate in the planning and design of the above systems and in the analysis and studies related to the technical and economic feasibility of Utility projects. The successful applicant will maintain a professional working relationship with customers and perform protective device coordination studies.

Qualifications
  • Three-year college program in electrical technology or equivalent background and experience.
  • Excellent planning coordination interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Five years experience in relaying metering control and communications work preferably within an electrical utility.
  • A competent working knowledge of a utility’s distribution system equipment construction materials and work methods.
  • Experience using all types of electrical and optical test equipment such as relay calibration test set, three‑phase power analyzer, power quality disturbance recorder, transformer ratiometer, digital storage oscilloscope, fibre optic power level meter, fibre optic OTDR, RF power level meter etc.
  • Experience using operating systems and application software such as Windows Server, SQL Server and Office 365. Experience with AutoCAD, Survalent SmartVU and STC Explorer, Accelerator Quickset, Millsoft Cyme and other electrical system analysis software.
  • Experience in calculating and applying relay settings to electromechanical, electronic and PLC relays such as overcurrent, directional overcurrent, transformer differential, feeder management, voltage regulating etc.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing all types of electrical, electronic and communications circuits and equipment, occasionally rendering a defective component on a printed circuit board.
  • Familiarity with serial communications standards such as RS‑232, RS‑485, Ethernet communications and protocols such as Modbus, DNP 3.0 TCP/IP etc.
  • Valid class G driver’s license as job duties require frequent field work.
