Shermco Canada is seeking a Protection & Control Technician III to join our field teams across British Columbia. The role focuses on testing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex protection and control systems for utilities, industrial facilities, and renewable energy projects.

You will lead field activities, mentor junior technicians, and deliver accurate test procedures and reports while upholding safety, quality, and customer satisfaction on every assignment.

Qualifications

• Three to seven years of protection and control testing, commissioning, or maintenance experience.
• Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline.
• Strong knowledge of protective relays, AC/DC schematics, relay logic, and protection principles.

Position Overview

The Protection and Control Technician III is an experienced field-based professional responsible for independently testing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex protection and control systems. This position also leads assigned field activities, supports customers, and provides technical guidance to junior technicians.

Responsibilities

• Test, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control systems for transmission, distribution, generation, renewable energy, and industrial facilities.
• Perform relay testing, logic verification, functional testing, and commissioning on SEL and other microprocessor-based relay platforms.
• Test line, transformer, bus, breaker failure, generator, transfer trip, and communication-assisted protection schemes.
• Interpret AC/DC schematics, relay logic, wiring diagrams, protection philosophies, and technical specifications.
• Analyze relay event reports, oscillography, fault records, and sequence-of-events data.
• Troubleshoot SCADA, communications, control, and substation automation systems.
• Lead field activities during outages, maintenance programs, and commissioning projects.
• Prepare accurate test procedures, technical reports, deficiency documentation, and corrective-action recommendations.
• Communicate technical findings and project updates to customers, engineering teams, and project stakeholders.
• Review work and provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior technicians.
• Perform all work in accordance with Shermco, customer, quality, and safety requirements.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power and Controls, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, military training, and relevant industry experience.
• Three to seven years of protection and control testing, commissioning, or maintenance experience.
• Strong knowledge of protective relays, AC/DC schematics, relay logic, substation control circuits, and protection principles.
• Experience commissioning transmission or distribution protection schemes.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and customer communication skills.
• Ability to independently manage assigned field work while meeting safety, quality, schedule, and customer requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Registration or eligibility for registration with ASTTBC.
• NETA certification or equivalent electrical testing experience.
• Experience with SEL relays, AcSELerator QuickSet, SCADA, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, or substation automation.
• Current WHMIS, First Aid/CPR/AED, fall protection, confined space, or other relevant safety training.
• Knowledge of CSA Z462 or equivalent electrical safety standards.

Travel and Working Conditions

• Ability to travel throughout British Columbia and occasionally to other locations in Canada, including overnight or extended assignments.
• Availability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, or statutory holidays when required by outages and project schedules.
• Valid driver's licence and driving record that meet company and insurer requirements.
• Ability to work safely in substations, industrial facilities, construction environments, and outdoor conditions.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and perform the essential duties of the role, with reasonable accommodation where required.
• Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, crouch, and lift or move equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms or 50 pounds.
• Hours of work, overtime, rest periods, and statutory holiday compensation will be administered in accordance with applicable B.C. employment standards and company policy.

The compensation range reflects Shermco Canada’s reasonable estimate at the time of posting. Final compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, certifications, technical capabilities, and internal equity.

Pay Range

CAD $65.00 - CAD $75.00 /Hr.
