Job summary

Norcan Hydraulic Turbine Inc. is seeking an estimator to prepare accurate hydro turbine project estimates and proposals. You will review bid documents, define scope, obtain supplier pricing via RFQs, build the estimate sheet for Sales and Management, and submit proposals.

You will collaborate with Engineering, Production and the Management Team, attend mandatory job walks, and help transition proposals to projects while maintaining CRM records.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years in estimating, proposals or tendering in heavy manufacturing.
• Experience in hydro/rotating equipment is a plus.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and BOM.
• Knowledge of ISO design and manufacturing standards.
• Experience with manufacturing cost estimating.

Responsibilities

• Review bid documents and RFQ packages including specs, drawings, schedule and customer requirements.
• Define scope of work with inclusions, exclusions, assumptions and clarifications.
• Prepare RFQs to suppliers/subcontractors and compare quotations.
• Develop estimates with budget pricing and hours with Engineering/Production input.
• Review estimates with Sales and Management and incorporate feedback.
• Prepare technical and commercial proposals and supplemental docs.
• Attend mandatory job walks and site visits.
• Document site visits and update CRM bi-weekly on open quotes.
• Transition proposals to projects with clear contract deliverables.

Job description

Prepare accurate, well-defined estimates and proposals for hydro turbine projects. This includes reviewing bid documents, clearly defining the scope of work, obtaining supplier pricing through the RFQ process, building the estimate sheet for review by the Sales team and Management, and preparing and submitting the proposal. Works closely with Engineering, Production and the Management Team, and attends mandatory job walks at customer sites.

TYPICAL DUTIES

• Review bid documents
  • Review tender and RFQ packages: specifications, drawings, schedule and customer requirements
  • Identify risks, gaps, exceptions and clarifications; raise questions with the customer
• Define the scope of work
  • Write a clear scope of work including inclusions, exclusions, assumptions and clarifications
  • Confirm scope with Engineering and Production
• Perform RFQ process
  • Prepare and send RFQs to suppliers and subcontractors
  • Follow up, compare quotations and clarify technical and commercial questions
• Material, outsourced work, engineering, and production
• Work with Engineering and Production to confirm budget pricing and hour estimates
• Review estimate with the Sales team and Management
  • Present the estimate and its assumptions for review; incorporate feedback
• Prepare and submit the proposal
  • Technical and commercial proposal and supplemental documentation, as required
  • Submit complete proposals before the bid deadline
• Attend mandatory job walks and site visits
  • Document site visits: photographs, measurements, contacts, site details
• Work with the Production Manager
  • Provide expected hours and timing of upcoming bids for shop loading
• Work with the Project Manager
  • Transitioning Proposals to Projects
  • Ensure all contract deliverables are known
• Maintain CRM Database
  • Update Management on a bi-weekly basis on open quotes
• Special projects as assigned

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Ability to travel within Canada and the USA (approximately 10-15% of the time)
• Ability to work extended hours around bid deadlines, including occasional evenings or weekends
• Able to effectively prioritize and execute multiple bids in a high-pressure, results-oriented environment
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and BOM
• Strong analytical skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills; able to explain estimate assumptions to Sales and Management
• Strong supplier communication and negotiation skills
• Highly self-motivated and self-directed; productive within a team environment
• Must possess a valid G driver’s license and Passport
• Proven problem-solving abilities
• Strong customer service relationships; takes pride in delivering high quality work

REQUIRED WORKING KNOWLEDGE

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• 2-5 years relevant experience in estimating, proposals or tendering in heavy manufacturing, machining, fabrication or the hydro / rotating equipment industry
• Any previous experience in items listed as “Working Knowledge” is an asset

EDUCATION REQUIRED

• Technical diploma or degree in mechanical, industrial or a related field, or equivalent experience

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ASSOCIATED HAZARDS

• Working at a computer for extended periods of time
• Travel (approximately 10-15%) to Hydroelectric stations for mandatory job walks. (PPE and Confined Space Entry/Working at Heights required)
• Travel to manufacturing vendors and suppliers (PPE required)
• Occasional extended hours near bid deadlines
