Job summary

Vertex Resource Group is seeking a Project Manager - Reclamation and Plant Sciences to lead environmental programs across Western Canada, including Oil Sands and mining sectors. You will oversee project execution, mentor staff, and drive program development while maintaining Vertex standards and supporting R&D in reclamation and vegetation.

The role emphasizes field-based work (up to 70%) and leadership in growing teams, with a hybrid work schedule from our Sherwood Park office.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in environmental science, biology, or related field.
  • Professional designation for sign-off in Alberta (British Columbia and /Saskatchewan an asset).
  • 5+ years of environmental experience with reclamation planning for mining, oil and gas, renewable energy and linear disturbances.
  • Knowledge or experience with tree regeneration surveys, forest permanent sample plot programs, seed collection, tree planting, wildlife habitat restoration, wetlands reclamation.
  • Strong project management: cost estimates, schedules, budgets, client engagement.
  • Willingness to conduct field work up to 70% of allotted time during field season.
  • Proven leadership in team growth and performance.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We're seeking a passionate and driven Project Manager - Reclamation and Plant Sciences to oversee and advance key environmental programs predominantly in the upstream oil and gas industry, Oil Sands, and mining sectors across Western Canada. This is an exciting opportunity to manage complex projects, mentor growing talent, and work with industry leaders in key sectors.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As Project Manager - Reclamation and Plant Sciences, you’ll manage project execution and client engagement, while supporting and mentoring intermediate and junior staff. Your leadership will drive program development, oversee field execution of a dynamic team, manage programs and projects to meet client and Vertex Project Management standards, and support Research and Development (R&D) initiatives in the reclamation and vegetation specialties across a dynamic portfolio.

You’ll play a pivotal role in:

  • Delivering cost-effective, efficient monitoring programs to align with regulatory compliance in the Oil Sands and mining sectors
  • Providing mentorship and training to junior and intermediate staff working on your projects/programs
  • Participate and support R&D initiatives in the reclamation and revegetation specialties to meet client or industry challenges associated with site closure, site management, and compliance challenges
  • Driving quality, efficiency, and excellence in all stages of project execution
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Diploma or degree in environmental science, biology, or related field
  • Professional designation for sign-off in Alberta (British Columbia and /Saskatchewan an asset)
  • 5+ years of environmental experience with:
    • Reclamation planning for mining, oil and gas, renewable energy and linear disturbances
    • Reclamation monitoring and assessment for mining, oil and gas, renewable energy and linear disturbances (soil, vegetation)
  • Knowledge or experience with the following are bonuses:
    • Tree regeneration surveys
    • Forest permanent sample plot programs
    • Seed collection
    • Tree planting
    • Wildlife habitat restoration
    • Wetland reclamation
  • Strong project management: cost estimates, schedules, budgets, client engagement
  • Willingness to conduct field work for training, mentoring and to support field execution of programs (expected field requirement is up to 70% of allotted time during the field season)

      • Identify and pursue opportunities to expand client services
      • Oversee performance and financials of all programs under your direction
      • Provide expert advice on strategy, document delivery, and project progress
    • Technical Requirements
      • Stay current and compliant with environmental regulations and guidelines
      • Provide practical, risk-informed solutions to clients and project teams
      • Oversee technical reporting and sign-off in your area of practice
      • Support and actively participate in the R&D component of Vertex services with a focus on reclamation, revegetation, and compliance support initiatives
    LOCATION

    This position will be based out of Vertex's Sherwood Park office (161, 2055 Premier Way),. A hybrid work schedule is available for this role.
