Project Manager – Intelligent Building Systems (ICAT)

The Opportunity
Our client is a well-established consulting engineering firm delivering complex, technology-driven building projects across Canada. They are seeking a Project Manager to join their Intelligent, Connected & Automated Technologies (ICAT) team in Ottawa.
This role is ideal for a professional with experience spanning building automation, audiovisual, telecommunications, and electronic safety and security systems, and a strong interest in the convergence of building technologies. The team focuses on integrated solutions that support smart, secure, and high-performance buildings across institutional, commercial, and mission-critical environments.
As a Project Manager, you will be responsible for both technical leadership and project execution, maintaining visibility across scope, schedule, budget, and coordination. You bring a structured, composed leadership style, are comfortable managing multiple workstreams, and communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and contractors.
This position offers exposure to large-scale, technically complex projects and the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping intelligent building solutions within a collaborative, multidisciplinary consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or support the development of system engineering concepts, design briefs, and technical reports for intelligent building systems, including:
- Building automation and controls
- Telecommunications and structured cabling
- Electronic safety and security systems
- Audiovisual and integrated technology systems
- Manage design development with consideration for construction budgets, schedules, and scope
- Review existing systems and installations, assessing impacts on project design and delivery
- Prepare technical calculations and support equipment selection
- Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards, communicating requirements to internal teams, external consultants, owners, and authorities having jurisdiction
- Coordinate effectively with architects, interior designers, and other engineering disciplines to ensure fully integrated documentation
- Understand and apply appropriate project procurement methodologies, providing recommendations where required
- Review technical deliverables (reports, drawings, specifications) for completeness, accuracy, and quality at defined project stages
- Promote and uphold internal project administration, documentation, and quality management standards
- Act as contract administrator on assigned projects, where required, including oversight of shop drawing reviews and site activities
- Coordinate with contract administration teams to ensure timely reviews and effective site processes
- Prepare or review change notices and respond to technical and financial project inquiries
- Monitor scope changes and support the preparation of contract amendments for client review
- Organize and participate in project and client meetings, including formal presentations when required
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Building automation and controls
- Telecommunications / structured cabling
- Electronic security systems
- Audiovisual systems
- Professional certifications such as RCDD, PSP, CTS/CTS-D, MCSE, CCIE, or P.Eng are considered assets
- Working knowledge of relevant industry standards and guidelines (e.g., AVIXA, BICSI, EIA/TIA, ASIS, CSA)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project)
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit is an asset
- Demonstrated ability to lead project teams and work independently in a consulting environment
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and coordinating with external consultants and contractors
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Highly organized, with a strong sense of urgency and the ability to prioritize effectively
- Bilingual (English/French) capabilities are an asset for Ottawa-based projects

Compensation Transparency
- The expected compensation range for this role is $85,000 – $125,000 annually, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
