Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Project Finance Controller to support multiple projects in accounting and finance functions, serving as the CFO and trusted advisor to Operations Managers and Executive Management. You will lead and develop the careers of team members, provide meaningful insights for decision making, and drive continuous improvement across the district.

Based in the GTA, the role offers exposure to large-scale projects across Canada, with opportunities to relocate teams as needed and grow

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • 5 years of financial/data analysis experience.
  • Strong Excel and financial accounting knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Experience in construction or engineering industry preferred.

Position Overview

As a Project Finance Controller, you will support multiple projects ranging from $1 million to $4 billion in accounting and finance related functions. In many cases, Project Controllers are directly assigned to our largest ($200M+) and most important projects, serving as the CFO and trusted advisor to Operations Managers and Executive Management. The primary focus of this position includes managing and developing the careers of business team members, establishing trust and credibility with upper level management, and providing meaningful insight and accurate analysis to those managers for decision‑making purposes. The Sr. Project Controller position also requires strong leadership skills, relentless ambition for continuous improvement, and polished technical and soft skills.

District Overview

Eastern Canada District’s projects include highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development & open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind‑power plants, dams & industrial. We serve the construction and mining industries and operate in Eastern Canada.

Location

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and effectively communicate financial results of the project to upper level management.
  • Earn trust, credibility, and buy‑in of processes from Operations team to create better cohesion and clear communication within the organization.
  • Understand financial reporting – including the upstream effects of reporting to other areas of the organization.
  • Manage the division of responsibilities and communication between various project & home office departments.
  • Drive continuous improvement throughout the organization and be a proponent for positive change.
  • Effectively utilize the right data, reports, and tools for risk analysis and benchmarking.
  • Review all project and estimate cash flows, contract terms, and change orders in detail for financial risks and opportunities.
  • Recognize when and who to escale specific conversations/issues.
  • Understand, substantiate, and reconcile all financial reports monthly and annually.
  • Create an inviting workplace that motivates and challenges each team member to achieve career goals and strive for opportunities.
  • Understand the needs of the organization, aim to bring in high quality talent, and continually develop team members through critical conversations and performance reviews.
  • Monitor results of new processes, troubleshoot failures and issues, and present solutions to unsolicited problems.
Qualifications
  • 5 years of financial/data analysis experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, and/or an equivalent degree is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting – general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tax.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Effective communication (both oral and written), organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • High level of professionalism and standards.
  • Managerial experience.
  • Must be able to freely access all parts of a construction site in wide‑ranging climates and environments.
  • CPA, MBA, or public accounting experience preferred.
  • Financial or accounting experience in construction or engineering industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with principal field business management systems: SAP, CMIS, PMIS and Prolog (P.O. and A/P) preferred.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing or managing a team preferred.

  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • May work at various different locations and conditions may vary.

Compensation

Base Compensation: $93,675/yr – $124,492/yr (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location).
