Job description

Peter Lucas Project Management invests in people, community, and cutting‑edge technology to provide gold standard project delivery. We are currently looking for a Project Field Engineer to join our team.

At Peter Lucas we offer a variety of work, professional development, and learning opportunities that come from working on diverse projects in the mining, energy, and heavy industrial sectors. Our dynamic environment, filled with high‑achieving professionals, enables our staff to take on incredible opportunities, gain mentorship from a diverse group of colleagues, and succeed in their careers.

Schedule
  • 5 days on 2 days off - initially remote/hybrid and transitioning to site near Princeton, BC
  • Full‑time on‑site during construction.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with external engineering consultants in support of the Project Manager - Water Management. Review design packages, manage Request for Information (RFI) processes, and coordinate the timely resolution of design conflicts and field discrepancies.
  • Create field sketches, redlines, and as‑built drawings for piping layouts, pipe supports, and mechanical equipment installations using drafting software to accommodate field conditions.
  • Perform site‑specific engineering calculations, including pipe hydraulics, pressure drops, pump sizing verification, and structural support assessments, ensuring compliance with applicable project standards and codes (e.g., ASME B31.3, ASME B31.11, API).
  • Provide construction support by interpreting blueprints, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings, and vendor manuals for field supervisors and contractors.
  • Oversee subgrade preparation, compaction, and liner installation for water storage ponds, ensuring compliance with geotechnical design specifications.
  • Perform civil and structural field calculations, including earthwork volumes (cut and fill), open‑channel flow hydraulics (ditch and culvert sizing), and basic concrete and rebar layout verification.
  • Coordinate the interface between civil and mechanical work by verifying foundation elevations, anchor bolt placement, concrete pad levels, and pipe trench depths prior to equipment and piping installation.
  • Coordinate with survey teams to verify lines, grades, and elevations for piping corridors, culverts, and water management infrastructure.
  • Monitor implementation of erosion and sediment control measures, such as silt fences and check dams, to ensure compliance with environmental permits and water discharge requirements.
  • Oversee and document quality control activities, including hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing, equipment alignment (pumps, compressors, and valves), and torque verification.
  • Review vendor documentation, including Material Test Reports (MTRs) and data sheets, and verify that mechanical and piping components meet engineering specifications.
  • Track and report daily and weekly progress of mechanical and piping installations against the project schedule, identifying potential bottlenecks and recommending mitigation strategies where required.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering (with a piping focus), or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience: 3‑6 years of experience in field engineering, construction engineering, or mechanical/piping design, preferably in heavy industrial sectors such as mining, oil & gas, or large‑scale water treatment.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D) is preferred. Experience with hydraulic modeling software (e.g., AFT Fathom, Pipe‑Flo) or structural analysis tools is considered an asset.
Technical Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of water management systems, HDPE piping, carbon and stainless steel piping, pumps, and valves.
  • Working knowledge of industrial piping codes (ASME B31.3) and mining/environmental regulations related to water management and discharge.
  • Experience with bulk earthworks, site grading, excavation, and construction of water containment structures, including lined sedimentation ponds and drainage channels.
  • Familiarity with geosynthetics, including installation and quality control testing of HDPE pond liners and geotextiles.
  • Knowledge of soil mechanics, compaction testing methods (e.g., Proctor testing and nuclear density gauge testing), and concrete reinforcement and placement inspections.
  • Understanding of surface water hydrology, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control practices.
Professional Skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with field personnel, project managers, contractors, and engineering consultants.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in fast‑paced field environments.
