Job summary

Stantec’s Western Canadian Power Delivery team seeks Project Engineers to work on HV/EHV AC/DC substation projects across North America. You will collaborate with Project Managers and multi-disciplinary teams to deliver reliable substations.

You will develop design plans, review vendor drawings, coordinate technical deliverables, and contribute to proposals, schedules and budgets while supporting construction and testing phases.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years experience in HV substations.
  • Professional Engineer registered with EGBC or related Canadian association.
  • 6 years of direct experience in Physical Design of HV substations (69kV+).

Responsibilities

  • Manage scope, schedule and cost with Project Managers and provide technical oversight.
  • Identify and manage project technical risks.
  • Act as project technical lead coordinating with internal teams, clients and sub‑contractors.
  • Lead design tasks: vendor drawings review, inter-disciplinary reviews, QA documentation.
  • Develop design plans, schedules and resource planning for engineering activities.
  • Coordinate development of specifications, drawings and reports.
  • Support construction, procurement and testing phases with technical input.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, project plans and estimates.
  • Conduct site visits to verify installations and provide construction support.
  • Perform detailed engineering work as needed.

Stantec’s Western Canadian Power Delivery team is currently offering exciting opportunities for Project Engineers to work on a variety of HV/EHV AC and DC substation projects throughout North America. Opportunities exist across a number of our western Canadian offices.

Project Engineers will work closely with Project Managers to manage the scope, schedule, and budget of high voltage substation projects. They will work within a multi-disciplinary team to develop efficient and reliable substations for our clients. They will contribute technical perspectives and coordinate the planning and design activities to ensure successful project delivery.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Project Managers to manage the scope, schedule, and cost of projects and provide technical oversight.
  • Identify and manage project technical risks.
  • Act as project technical lead to collaborate with internal engineering teams, clients, and third party stakeholders.
  • Lead and coordinate with internal engineering teams to complete tasks such as reviewing vendor drawings of equipment, inter-disciplinary reviews of deliverables, maintain and update project technical document of record as well as internal QA, organize and initiate communication with internal teams on resolving complex technical challenges, etc.
  • Develop design plans, strategies, schedules and resource planning for engineering activities on projects at Identification, Definition and Implementation phases.
  • Coordinate and oversee the development of technical documents such as specifications, drawings and reports.
  • Work with construction management, engineering, and procurement management to ensure that technical support is available and issues are addressed in a timely manner during construction, fabrication, and testing & commissioning phases.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, project plans and estimates.
  • Follow internal QA/QC procedures to deliver high quality engineering services to clients.
  • Conduct site visits to verify existing installation, define project scopes, prepare for detailed designs and provide construction site supports as required.
  • May be required to conduct detailed engineering work such as design, specifications, and studies.
Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Field experience in commissioning and testing is considered an asset.
  • Proven knowledge in Geotechnical, Civil/Structural, P&C, SCADA, Telecom, Mechanical, and Architectural is an asset.
  • Equipment engineering experience is an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
  • Effective interpersonal skills (written & verbal) are essential for interacting with multi-disciplinary teams, suppliers, sub-consultants and managing client relationships.
  • Demonstrated capability to efficiently handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Holding a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver’s license.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (specialization in Power System) with minimum 8 years of proven experience of project engineer role related to high voltage substations for utilities in North America.
  • 6 years of direct experience on Physical Design of high voltage (69kV and above) substation projects is required.
  • Professional Engineer registered with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or related association in Canada.

Typical office environment working with computers; Stantec offers a flexible work environment (a hybrid model of working in the office and at home). Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

About the Team

Pay Transparency:In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
