THE PROJECT ACCOUNTANT OPPORTUNITY
Turner Construction’s Vancouver team is seeking a full-time Project Accountant to work on‑site or in the head office, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). Reporting to either the Accounting Manager or Senior Accountant, the Project Accountant will lead all fiscal management and financial administration aspects of projects, providing financial services to profit centers and/or projects. The Project Accountant will ensure that all team members—including the Project Manager, Superintendent, and Engineer—adhere to Turner’s financial policies and procedures, collaborate with project teams to maintain compliance with company financial standards, and communicate any potential profitability issues or risks to management.
As a Project Accountant, you will:
- Set up, lead, oversee, and implement procedures to ensure client contractual requirements are met regarding billing and accounts receivable. Conduct client contract analysis to determine billing deadlines, payment terms, billable and non reimbursable expenses, agreements for insurance and fee billings, along with approved billing rates for staff and/or trade labor.
- Regularly audit client billing and project ledger, ensuring both meet contract requirements, accounting standards (including GAAP), and company policy.
- Manage accounts payable for vendor and subcontractor invoice processing. Ensure accounts are up to date for assigned projects, proper sales and use tax are accounted for, all applicable lien waivers are submitted, and contracts and insurance requirements are in place prior to scheduling payments. Report subcontractor payment issues to the project team as needed.
- Participate in and manage the monthly close process, ensuring all client bills and project costs are posted or accrued if work is in place and of material value, adhering to the company calendar.
- Assist and comply with all internal and external audit requests.
- Assist with the setup of financial administration, general conditions budgeting, and certain tax reporting for projects.
- Responsible for processingassets, insurance, rentals, and tax requirements related to projects. Update monthly project assets and rentals for insurance documentation with the project team.
- Prepare cash position reports, assess potential risks and/or profitability related to net assets, liabilities, and unfunded work in place, and communicate findings to management and project teams.
- Assist in preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses, and information reports for profit centers and projects.
- Identify and track financial issues on behalf of the company.
- Coordinate and communicate with customers and vendors concerning accounts payable and accounts receivable issues.
- Prepare bank, balance sheet, and miscellaneous reconciliations.
- Participate in the project financial closeout process, ensuring final contract amounts and closeout documentation requirements have been met and agreed to by subcontractors prior to issuing final payments.
- Comply with local and Canadian tax requirements, processing transactions accordingly.
- Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
Is this the right role for you:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or corresponding international degree) from an accredited and credentialed program, with 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Experience in the construction industry is highly preferred.
- Excellent working knowledge of accounting principles, including GAAP and IFRS, to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Knowledgeable of cash flow principles and procedures.
- Understanding of accounting implications of various contract terms related to profitability and risk management.
- Ability to perform cost analysis procedures.
- High degree of organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Must follow established procedures and execute directions to completion without the need for follow‑up by management.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team environments.
- Must be a self‑starter, adaptable, and flexible, capable of operating with minimal direction and little or no supervision in a complex and changing environment.
- Strong proficiency with financial system applications and MS Office, specifically Excel and Word.
- Exercises independent judgment, maintains confidentiality, and uses discretion in identifying problems and recommending resolutions.
- Demonstrates leadership, integrity, and a strong dedication to teamwork within a professional environment.
- Professional proficiency in English with excellent oral and written communication skills.

The annual base salary range for this position may be CA$80,000 to CA$92,000, depending on experience and fit.
