St. Lawrence College is seeking experienced and motivated professional who share St. Lawrence College’s vision to be a globally recognized college, delivering innovative learning opportunities and preparing career-ready graduates to be leaders in their field.

St. Lawrence College is currently seeking qualified Professors on a part‑time basis with experience and expertise in the Medical Laboratory Assistant-Technician program.

We are seeking an individual experienced to teach in the following course, within the Personal Support Worker program:

LABS 1000: Laboratory Techniques

This integrated laboratory‑theory course will teach the student how to use and handle various laboratory equipment and materials safely and properly. This course provides the student with the theory knowledge and essential applied skills required for the safe practice and complexities of clinical laboratory work.

LABS 1001: Laboratory Foundations

This theory course provides an overview of the Medical Laboratory profession and the Canadian healthcare system. Students will gain an understanding of the Quality Management and Safety Legislation that governs laboratory operations and patient care. Additionally, students will examine the historical and current trends and issues in healthcare.

LABS 1002: Laboratory Skills 1

This integrated laboratory‑theory course introduces students to the principles and techniques of specimen collection and microscopy in the medical laboratory science field. Students will learn how to handle blood and other body fluids and tissues for diagnostic testing. Students will also learn how to use bright field microscopy to examine different cell and tissue types. This course integrates theory and applied components and emphasizes the development of professional behaviours and safety standards.

HSTO 1000: Histology 1

This integrated laboratory‑theory course covers the fundamentals of EKG and anatomical pathology lab skills. Students will learn about the heart's structure, function, and electrical activity, as well as how to perform and interpret EKG tests. Students will also learn about the preparation and examination of tissue specimens for histological analysis. The course emphasizes the importance of professionalism, patient education, informed consent, confidentiality, and ethics in both settings.

MICR 1001: Microbiology 1

This integrated laboratory‑lecture course introduces students to the methods, safety protocols, and aseptic techniques required in clinical microbiology. Students will gain the knowledge to classify and understand the physiology and identification of bacteria at an introductory level. Practical skills developed encompass the isolation, staining, culturing, and sterilization/disinfection methods related to common pathogenic microorganisms encountered in clinical microbiology.

TRAN 1001: Blood Science

This integrated laboratory‑theory course offers a comprehensive introduction to clinical hematology and transfusion science. Students will explore key theoretical concepts and practical applications essential to these fields, including the study of blood, blood‑forming organs, and the roles of antigens and antibodies in circulation. Alongside theoretical knowledge, students will develop practical skills and gain hands‑on experience with laboratory methods, preparing them for careers in clinical hematology and transfusion laboratories.

These positions will be primarily located at the Kingston Campus; however, occasional travel to support programs on other campuses may be requested. Candidates may be required to teach from an online/alternate delivery format on occasion. Candidates must be available to teach Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. With the possibility of working on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Effectively use the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to build a contemporary and evidenced based practice.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / DESIGNATION:

Education Specific to the position:

Bachelor of Science Degree, a graduate of a Medical Laboratory Science Program, and registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).

Experience specific to the position:

A minimum of 5 years of relevant, current experience working in the Medical Laboratory Science field.

Knowledge or Skills specific to the position:

Demonstrated thorough knowledge of current trends in laboratory practice (CMLTO and CSMLS). Thorough knowledge of medical laboratory science practice which aligns to the entry‑level practitioner.

  1. Teaching experience using a Learning Management System and virtual meeting technology system.
  2. Teaching experience at the post‑secondary level or experience in adult instructions techniques and practice using principles of andragogy and curriculum design experience will be required.
  3. A demonstrated practice supporting a diversity of learners.
  4. Experience participating in industry‑led or community‑based applied research will be an asset.
  5. A proven track record of life‑long learning.
  6. A demonstrated commitment to putting “students first”.
  7. Candidates are requested to list all St. Lawrence College teacher training or equivalent they possess on their resume.
  8. A global mindset and intercultural knowledge and competence to teach in a global environment including international students is required.
  9. An understanding of the Ontario college system.

Candidates who do not meet the specified education but who possess a relevant and acceptable combination of education, training, and a depth of industry experience may be considered.

Candidates seeking faculty positions with the College will be required to demonstrate the ability to design, facilitate and assess learning in accordance with adult learning principles and universal design in learning (UDL). An ongoing commitment to professional learning will be expected.

Successful candidates are expected to have their own computer, reliable internet connection, and the ability to teach remotely or on Campus, as may be required. The use of virtual meetings through video conferencing software will be required in this role. Professors are also expected to possess or develop proficiency in the use of a Learning Management Software (LMS) to a degree that meets academic standards.

All Professors will be provided with support by the School of Contemporary Teaching and Learning in their onboarding and orientation to teach at St. Lawrence College. Support and coaching is provided to new faculty to provide a strong theoretical foundation of teaching and learning, and to orient them to the teaching tools and strategies required for teaching in a contemporary and modern learning institution. Salary: $80.62 – $139.88 per hour. Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
