The Production Supervisor is a key role supervising day-to-day operations to ensure safety, productivity, efficiency, quality, service, and profitability for their team and the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure employee health and safety through compliance with all safety and mine regulations, company policies, and regulations
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment
- Coordinate open pit activities; loading, hauling, dumping and related tasks
- Control pit operations to detect safety violations and compile safety and production records
- Assist in work scheduling and planning, ensuring alignment to weekly plan deliverables
- Prepare reports on accidents/incidents that occur during the shift
- Conduct daily pre-shift meetings to inform employees of safety and production issues
- Organize training for equipment operators to improve competencies
- Understand, promote, and operate by the company vision, values, goals, objectives and strategies
- Provide job-specific instructions daily and monitor progress
- Ensure all employees are properly trained on the use of appropriate equipment
- Communicate routinely and effectively with the Project Manager and other supervisors as required
- Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including Technical Services and Maintenance Teams
- Work collaboratively with the Union and manage in a manner compliant with collective agreement obligations
- Participate in weekly planning by providing inputs and highlighting shortfalls that could disrupt operations
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), participate in risk assessments, adhere to safe work practices, and report hazards as per the Internal Responsibility System
- Contribute to a respectful work environment in compliance with the Code of Conduct and the Healthy, Safe and Respectful Workplace policy
- Follow all policies and procedures and the Employee Handbook
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results within a team environment with minimal supervision at times
- Good oral and written communication skills
- High attention to detail and excellent follow-up skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Mining or heavy industrial construction experience is an asset
- Ability and willingness to work different schedules on site based on project needs
- Post-high school training in a related area
Job Requirements
- Surface Common Core and Completion of Generic First Line Supervisor Common Core
- Minimum of 3–5 years' experience as a shift Supervisor in an open pit with demonstrated leadership competencies
- Managing in a unionized workplace preferred
- Strong working knowledge of OHSA
- Technical skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Clear and persuasive communication in positive or challenging situations
- Ability to facilitate difficult conversations
- Active listening and confirmation of understanding
- Ability to relay concepts and train others for competence
- Respond promptly and effectively to questions
- Maintain thorough and responsible documentation
- Must be fluent in English
- Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship is required (Intra-Company Transfer under the International Mobility Program may receive assistance from Thiess)
Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
Additional Information
- Currently based out of the Stobie Open Pit Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
- Work schedule: 7 days on / 7 days off, rotating 12-hour shifts (days and nights) (subject to change)
- Occasional local travel as needed
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
