Job summary

Silent-Aire, a Johnson Controls division, seeks a Product Design Engineer to lead complex equipment design and drive manufacturable solutions. You will mentor junior engineers and coordinate with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and project teams to deliver high‑quality designs for production.

You will develop and release Creo 9 models and drawings, perform analyses, and implement scalable design solutions that support throughput and long‑term strategy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Technical/Associate Degree with equivalent experience.
• Senior-level product design experience delivering complex equipment in a production environment.
• Ability to work independently on complex technical problems and drive solutions.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes and impact on cost, quality, throughput.
• Proficiency in Creo 9, Windchill PLM, and SAP.
• Ability to mentor junior engineers and designers.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of data center equipment standards and practices.
• Experience designing equipment within manufacturing environments.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Create and release accurate 3D models, drawings, and documentation in Creo 9 per internal standards.
• Perform engineering analyses, trade studies, and risk reviews to justify design decisions.
• Improve manufacturability and support DFMs with cross-functional partners.
• Communicate technical decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Design mechanical parts, sub-assemblies, general assemblies, plumbing layouts, and sheet‑metal.
• Collaborate to optimize product designs for cost, quality, and schedule.
• Develop and implement engineering changes and resolve design issues.
• Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for projects.
• Execute ECRs/ECOs per established processes.
• Conduct periodic inspections on production to ensure release specs.

What you will do:

As a Product Design Engineer, you will lead complex product design and development work—driving robust, manufacturable solutions, providing technical guidance to junior engineers and designers, and coordinating across cross‑functional teams. This role focuses on delivering high‑quality designs for production while improving product architecture and design standards to support scalable manufacturing.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and project teams to evaluate performance‑critical components, develop and maintain standard design procedures (SOPs), and implement scalable design solutions that support manufacturing throughput and long‑term product strategy.

How you will do it:

• Utilize PTC Creo 9 to create and release accurate 3D models, drawings, and documentation packages in compliance with internal design standards and change control processes.
• Perform engineering analyses, trade studies, and risk reviews to justify design decisions and ensure technical and functional requirements are met.
• Partner with manufacturing engineering, quality, and operations to improve manufacturability, reduce variation, and support production ramp priorities through practical Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
• Communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, including internal teams and external suppliers as required.
• Design and draft mechanical parts, sub‑assemblies, general assemblies, plumbing layouts, and sheet‑metal assemblies.
• Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize product designs for cost, quality, and schedule.
• Develop and implement engineering changes and resolve design issues that arise during the product lifecycle.
• Conduct independent technical investigations and troubleshooting with engineering, manufacturing, and vendors.
• Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for assigned projects.
• Execute Engineering Change Requests (ECRs/ECOs) in accordance with established processes.
• Perform periodic inspections on the production floor to ensure products are built to released specifications and design intent.

What we are looking for:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Technical/Associate Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with equivalent experience.
• Senior‑level product design experience delivering complex equipment designs and design improvements in a production environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex technical problems and drive solutions across multiple stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how design decisions impact cost, quality, and throughput.
• Proficiency in PTC Creo 9, with working knowledge of Windchill PLM and SAP.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present and defend technical recommendations.
• Working knowledge of industry standards, codes, and practices relevant to air handling and OEM equipment.
• Experience in equipment design within a manufacturing environment.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience improving or developing product architecture to support manufacturing scalability and consistent build packages.
• Experience with formal peer review and structured engineering change control in a production environment.
• Direct collaboration experience with manufacturing engineering, quality, suppliers, and cross‑functional program teams.
• Familiarity with standards and regulations related to data center equipment.
