Job summary

GCM is seeking a chemical engineer to join our team in Canada. The role focuses on defining projects, developing process solutions, and delivering technical documentation for heavy industry clients in refining and petrochemicals.

Occasional travel within Canada is expected as projects require collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. You will contribute to design reviews, risk assessments, and supervision of junior engineers while ensuring quality and schedule adherence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related discipline with significant process design experience.
• 5–10 years of relevant heavy industry experience in refining, chemical or petrochemical sectors and/or consulting engineering.

Responsibilities

• Participate in defining projects and developing solution concepts during conceptual, preliminary and detailed engineering.
• Prepare design basis documents, mass and energy balances, process simulations, P&IDs and related deliverables.
• Perform hydraulic calculations and select/size equipment, instruments and piping.
• Prepare reports, calculation notes, data sheets and other process deliverables.
• Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Ensure technical quality of deliverables and adherence to project hour budgets and schedules.
• Mentor and provide technical supervision to less experienced engineers.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Participate in defining projects and developing solutions during conceptual, preliminary and detailed engineering
• Prepare design basis documents, mass and energy balances, process simulations, process flow diagrams and P&IDs
• Perform hydraulic calculations and select and size equipment, instruments and piping
• Prepare reports, calculation notes, data sheets and other process deliverables
• Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and multidisciplinary coordination
• Ensure the technical quality of deliverables and compliance with project hour budgets and schedules
• Mentor and provide technical supervision to less experienced engineers

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or a related discipline, combined with significant experience in process design
• Five to ten years of relevant experience in heavy industry, particularly in the refining, chemical and petrochemical sectors and/or consulting engineering

Assets:

• Knowledge of Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, AFT, Pipe-Flo or Aspen EDR
• Available for occasional short-term travel within Canada (one to two weeks)
• Experience in process safety, including HAZOP studies or process safety management.
• Fluency in English and the ability to collaborate in French, both orally and in writing, with colleagues and clients based in Quebec.
