Job summary

Carbon Engineering is seeking a Process Engineer Co-op to support the Innovation Centre and STRATOS CO2 capture plant. You will help troubleshoot processes, analyze performance data, and support design upgrades during a hands-on, front-line assignment.

The 8‑month program starts January 2027, with training in Squamish, BC, followed by work in Ector County, Texas. Relocation support and company housing are provided, and sponsorship for US work authorization is available.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in Canadian post‑secondary institute (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year).
  • Preference to candidates in Chemical Engineering discipline (B.Eng or equivalent).
  • Comfortable in a chemical/plant environment. Preference for previous experience working in a hazardous environment.
  • Strong understanding of core engineering principles (thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics).
  • Thrive on doing things that have not been done before (explorer mindset).

Responsibilities

  • Process Troubleshooting and Operational Support: assist startup and production, diagnose issues from field checks and data.
  • Data Analysis and Report Generation: collect plant data, review performance, document results.
  • Support Engineering Design: assist upgrades, participate in HA ZOPS, inspections, and commissioning.
  • Engineering Documentation: update P&IDs, instrument lists, equipment lists, MoC processes.
  • Collaboration: interface with Operations, Engineering, Tech Development and external partners.

Position Scope

The Process Engineer Co-op is responsible for supporting engineering activities at Carbon Engineering’s Innovation Centre and Oxy’s STRATOS Carbon Capture Plant. STRATOS is a groundbreaking Direct Air Capture facility designed to capture up to 500,000 tons of CO2 per year once fully operational. The role collaborates with the Engineering, Operations, and Technical Development teams to design and implement improvements to process units, analyze run data, and troubleshoot operation.

  • This position is an 8 month co-op starting January 2027.
  • This position is on-site and based in Squamish, BC for training for the 1st month, followed by the remaining 7 months in Ector County, Texas.
  • Relocation support is provided,including first month company paid accommodation is Squamish, BC and company accommodations in Ector County, Texas. Travel costs are paid by company.
  • This position may require some shift work
  • This position pays $24-26/hour with additional remote pay for US assignment work; with additional company paid support for travel, accommodations, etc.
  • Must be eligible for J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor program for work study in the US, or equivalent US work authorization. Application to be sponsored by CE/ Oxy. Must also have current Canadian work authorization.
Health, Safety and Environment
  • Demonstrate a positive safety culture.
  • Identify, report and resolve unsafe conditions, processes or actions within the workplace.
  • Ensure that all safety related incidents, accidents and near misses are reported and investigated in line with company policy.
Technical
  • Process Troubleshooting and Operational Support
    • Support plant startup and production by troubleshooting plant issues through a combination of field assessments, reviewing drawings and documentation and reviewing plant process data.
    • Provide in-field technical support to operations personnel during key field testing, commissioning, or production runs.
    • Act as a liaison between the technical team and operations personnel to ensure plant objectives are clear, and communicate key technical information.
  • Data Analysis and Report Generation
    • Collect and assimilate plant data and lab results.
    • Review plant data and analyze system performance against the test campaign objectives.
    • Document results, analysis and interpretation of plant performance into technical reports, presentations and other communications.
  • Support Engineering Design
    • Support plant upgrades from early design to construction and commissioning.
    • Participate in Process Hazards Assessments (HAZOPS, What-If Analysis).
    • Perform field checks/inspections for projects you helped engineer.
    • Develop work plans and commissioning procedures to validate functionality of upgrades.
  • Engineering Documentation
    • Support document and drawing updates at Carbon Engineering’s Innovation Centre (P&IDs, Instrument Lists, Equipment Lists), as well as at the STRATOS plant.
    • Support the execution of plant modifications through participation in the MoC (Management of Change) process.
  • Collaboration
    • Interface with various in-house departments (Operations, Engineering, Technology Development), external engineering partners, and vendors/fabricators on project tasks.
    • Present technical information, concepts, or study results to project stakeholders.
