About the Opportunity

Methanex is currently seeking a Process Engineer to join the teamin Medicine Hat, AB on a full-time basis. This role is a two-year temporary contract.

The Process Engineer role works alongside the Technical department to identify and implement operational improvements that enhance plant efficiency and productivity, ensuring safe and reliable performance while minimizing risks to people, equipment, and the environment.

More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the plant site in achieving daily excellence in plant operations by tracking and proposing process changes to meet established targets for plant rate and energy efficiency
  • Providing engineering input into troubleshooting operational problems, plant upsets, and plant shutdowns and startups
  • Participating in the development of process-related procedures (e.g., catalyst reduction)
  • Providing process engineering support, including equipment sizing, for plant changes using the Plant Change Request procedures
  • Maintaining, performing, and updating a plant monitoring program to track the operational performance of key process equipment, and issuing associated monitoring reports
  • Participating in Process Hazard Analysis studies, such as Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) or Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), to identify, minimize, and mitigate risks and hazards throughout the plant
  • Actively participating in the 20 elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) (e.g., Process Knowledge Management)
  • Participating in Process and Non-Process Safety Audits in accordance with the assigned schedule
  • Ensuring the implementation of relevant Engineering, Projects, and IT procedures
  • Networking with other Process Engineering teams at global Methanex sites for the mutual benefit of all sites
  • Providing financial analysis and/or feasibility studies for plant projects
  • Ensuring project work is implemented in accordance with Methanex procedures, Methanex Project Standards (MPS), international standards, and Alberta legislation
  • Ensuring compliance with all Pressure Equipment Integrity Management (PEIM) responsibilities relevant to the role, in accordance with the PEIM Manual
  • Assisting in the preparation of regulatory and government reports related to safety and environmental releases
  • Conducting all business in a manner that supports the Responsible Care® ethic
  • Remaining current with all safety and procedural training related to the role
  • Actively participating in the site’s behavioural-based safety program, Everyone Owns Safety (EOS), by completing monthly safety observations
  • Participating in incident investigations and root cause analysis
About You

To qualify, you will need an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, along with 3-5 years of engineering experience, with at least 2 years working in a gas processing facility. Candidates must be eligible for membership as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Relevant experience with Process Modelling software such as Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating, or equivalent
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, and Visio
  • Competency with hazard review/analysis software (PHAPro is preferred)
